hello gang,

is recompiling the kernal somthing that needs to be done often in Linux,
like loading service packs in NT. Like everytime you load new programs?
It seems to me that as I have added packages to a certain profile my
machine starts running sluggishly and even quits responding at times.

I create a new profile and things are all installed fine and run great.
What am I missing here. There have been times that I have installex this
and it runs like a top and other times it runs like an old hog..... help!!!!!

You should only need to recompile the kernel if you change hardware in
your machine or want to upgrade the kernel version.

another reason for compiling your own kernel is to make your box faster.
An optimized kernel is allways faster then a generic one. This is the
big advantage in linux, that you can do this, so if you feel up to it,
do it.

ok,
so recompiling I will assume is after one has tweaked and setup Linux to
their liking they recompile and essentially this becomes "the OS" right?

What would the command be to do this. I hope that wasn't way to dumb to
ask...

TIA

Tim, no offense intended, but just how did you get to be a "Certified
Technician & Network Administrator" if you don't know how to do this? Maybe
this is the problem at my ISP.

To answer your question though, check out this to start.
