I just installed Linux Mandrake 7.1 on my computer. In Windows 2000 I
can get a resolution of 1900x1200 dpi. Is it possible to get that
resolution in Linux? I know that I have to change the X configuration
file, but how?

Thanks!

It's possible. I'm doing it with my setup:

32 MB Matrox G400 twin head
Sun 24" Monitor

It was possible with the 16MB Matrox G400 single head card as
well, same monitor.

I believe that the Mandrake 7.1 distro includes a monitor spec
for the Sun 24" premium monitor (it uses a Sony trinitron tube, I
believe), however, XConfigurator didn't seem to know that the
montior can do 1900x1200 resolution through the normal
configuration process.

I believe this to be a "feature" of the PNP information that you
can retrieve from the monitor through it's various input ports --
the monitor supports two ports: one with a standard PC connector,
and one with the special Sun connector (which you can adapt to a
PC connector with a dongle available from Sun). Only *one* of the
ports tells the connected computer that it can do 1900x1200
resolution (I ran into this problem when trying to connect the
monitor to a Wintel system as well) -- the Sun Video port (so you
need the dongle).

When a Linux *or* a Wintel system is connected to the *other*
port (with the standard PC connecter), the OS only detects that
it can do 1600x1200, even though the monitor can support the
widescreen mode.

On Windows, you have no hope but to connect it to the Sun video
port, with dongle, in order to get the widescreen mode out of the
monitor. On Linux, connecting to the Sun video port should let
XConfigurator see the 1900x1200 mode. However, you don't really
need to use XConfigurator; you just need to be able to provide a
set of timings that will work for your monitor...

So... I hacked together a set of modelines for the 24" monitor,
using the specs mentioned in their manual, and the monitor spec
for another 24" monitor that was included in the 6.x/7.0 distro:

I used this spec with success in 6.x, 7.0, and now with 7.1. The
7.1 upgrade process included my settings successfully in it's new
XF86Config file (although I still had to retwiddle my keyboard
section).

I hope this helps someone else out -- it took me a fair amount of
time to puzzle it out myself...
