Well more by luck than judgement I managed to get the graphics working
in my laptop, and currently I am using KDE 3.2 and it is running quite
nicely, however I have one issue, it hangs on shutdown, sometimes the
cooling fan kicks in sometimes not either way I just get a dark
butglowing screen, waiting does not help, and it has to be manually
switched off, has anyone seen this, or have a resolution for it?

Also a bit OT - I thought you could change the level ofwindows
transparency on KDE however I cannot find a setting for this, does it
exist?

TIA

More info is required. What videocard? What laptop? How did you get it to
work? Search for issues on /var/log/messages.

Have you applied all the updates and are you running the latest kernel?

Set up the updates repository on mandrake's control center and then close
it. Go to a console, it's faster.

urpmi.update -a

urpmi --update --auto-select

uname -a

Write down your kernel version, which you will need to pick after issuing
the following command:

urpmi --update kernel

That is a nice way of doing it, anyway it reports 'everything already
installed'

Kernel version is 2.6.3-7mdk

Machine is a Dell C800 Laptop
1 Gig CPU
512 Meg RAM

Card: ATI Rage Mobility
Monitor: Flat Panel 1024x768
Resolution:1024x768

The machine shouldbe able to support a far higher resolution, however
if I make changes to the settings via the control center they are lost
ofter a restart

Many thanks

Are you sure that you have set up an update source in Mandrake's control
center. Or google for easy urpmi and set up an update source.

This is further evidence that you have not done your updates. That is not
the latest kernel.

I have the same card on my laptop and it works very well. Make sure that you
are picking the correct monitor. If you want to, I can send you my
XFree86Config-4 file.

It is now running the full suite of updates and kernel 2.6.3-16mdk but
still hangs, I have seen a couple articles that suggest it is chipest
or USB related and Mandrake suggest making mods to lilo.conf:

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3

Quote:
Solution: Add any or all of the following boot kernel parameters to
your /etc/lilo.conf file: "acpi=off", "noapic", or "nolapic". Execute
"lilo -v" to update the LILO configuration. After boot, execute the
following commands:

# modprobe -r uhci-hcd
# modprobe uhci-hcd

Unquote

However after I have made the change and run lilo -v I get a message
'Unrecognised token' is there a specific place to add such changes?

Incidentaly this issue does not appear to be related to any one front
end, and starting in fail safe it still happens.

Out of interest what resolution do you run on your machine, and a copy
of your XFree86Config-4 file would be worth trying. My mail addy is:

Something like
append="devfs=mount acpi=force resume=/dev/hdb1 splash=0"
