Conquest of Elysium 3 on sale
|
| |
Conquest of Elysium 3 is on sale for the next week.
[link]
It is 35% off. For those who dont know, its the latest game by the same people who created Dominions 3. A lighter, quicker play, better solo play (and cheaper) game than Dom3 but with many of the same wonderful features.... more »

rsyslog.conf question
|
| |
I'm running a pretty stock install of rsyslogd on my workstation, and was experimenting with rsyslogd. I noticed in /etc/rsyslogd.conf that some paths had a "-" before them and others didn't. For instance, the snippet below pertains to the mail logging. The first two lines begin with -/var while the third is just /var (no dash in front).... more »

Re. Booting from CF/stik is interesting.
|
| |
...
I think I'm wrong there.
Because Ctrl/Alt/Del is even active from the BIOS
stage of booting on this netbook.
K which is slak13-based, has knl2.6.29.4 & initrd.gz
whereas slak13 has 2.6.29.6 and NO initrd*,
and they both fail with messages <can see your
sda1,2,3,4 hard-disk/s but can't see your CF or USBstik>.... more »

Booting from CF/stik is interesting.
|
| |
This interesting/novel log of booting from USBstik and Compact Flash is relevant to Debian, Slackware and
other distributions, and consequently this post is NOT inappropriately cross-posted.
All clik-jockeys exit here ->
Debian-Etch boots, but Slackware13 & k [a slak13 derivative] give errors: <can only see the dev/sda1,2,3,4... more »

Wait statements in boot-scripts not needed by OS?
|
| |
You may have noticed some "Wait statements" appearing during the boot process, and seen them in the scripts of
the boot sequence.
These seem rather adhoc and amateurish with comments like
"better wait a bit for slow spin-up devices".
My theory as to why this 'guess how long to wait' method is... more »

iptables NAT forwarding adding 75-100ms
|
| |
I have a strange occurrence of lag on my local networking. I have a
cable modem that plugs into a Debian server, then that Debian server is
plugged into a switch that all other machines in the house connect to.
So something like:
wan0 -> wan
eth0 -> lan
The relevant forwarding/NAT rules are:... more »

What modules are needed to use CF & USBstik?
|
| |
This query applies to installations other than Slakware, so lets not
resort to foot-ball-hooligan-tribalism.
2 slak-family installations fail to boot from the CF, whereas Debian-Etch does boot.
The one failing slak's initrd-script, at the fail-point reads:----
if [ "$DATA" = "" ]; then
# from= is not used or it didn't contain valid data... more »

Exim configuration issue: sending from different domain
|
| |
I'm running Debian Squeeze, with exim4, and using mutt for mail.
My machine has this:
$ hostname --fqdn
engels.HistoricalMaterialism.i nfo
However, for mail I use hai...@histomat.net, which I also own. Outgoing
messages fall into a black hole, particularly with email lists to which... more »

Stupid PS1
|
| |
You get the most effect by optimising the highest-determinant.
Eg. your health is a very 'high' determinat of your life-quality.
A high determinant of computer-useability MUST be the mnemonic value of the <prompt>.
"localhost:/etc#" is VERY lame as a prompt.
WTF is the value of the "localhost:" taking up space every time?... more »
