I've not run a testing distro much until lately (simplifies wifi on my
Acer netbook) - I was wondering if the increase in daily updates I've
noticed recently is typical before a freeze. And can I expect them to
lessen now?

Once the transition occurs, expect virtual silence for a few days, if you
remain on "testing", rather than follow wheezy to stable. Then there's
likely to be a huge increase in packages transitioning for a few days.

All jolly fun.
