Apologies to the group for showing up and tugging their sleeves.

I had a game of Nethack in progress when I was hit by a power cut. Now I
can't start nethack. I've tried re-installing the game, completely
removing the game and doing a fresh install, and no luck. I've been
playing nethack on linux since Red Hat v.1, and this has happened before
- the game leaves a lock file behind, in a different location with every
distribution and version as far as I can tell.

I'm using debian squeeze and nethack 3.4.3. I'd be very grateful for
most suggestions (excluding those which no doubt leap to the mind when a
long time lurker leaps out begging for help), or alternative solutions.

The lockfile is in /var/games/nethack. However, when I try to start a
second game it asks me if I want to destroy the first.
