Installing from CD across LAN: not quite there
|
| |
Trying to install Etch onto a machine with blank HD but no floppy or CD; no internet connection is available at the site. After lots of reading of the Debian and Debian-Installer manuals, installing across a local network seems possible (sects 2.2.5 & 4.6 of the installation guide). PXE boot from a TFTP server works ok, starting the basic... more »

audio "ringing" with audacity and other recorders
|
| |
I've recently tried several programs to convert old vinyl LP's to digital format. The only ones that work properly on my machine are Krec and Krecord. I'd like to use gramofile or audacity, but they appear to add a peculiar "ringing" when writing the data to a file. I'm feeding the Line Out of a turntable to the Line In of the built-in... more »

Etch-and-a-half kernel in Etch
|
| |
I have a server that runs Etch. We do fun stuff with it; a few home pages, some game servers, etc (I'm not a business or anything). But, I have no physical access to it. I'm trying to upgrade the kernel from 2.6.18 to 2.6.24. Pretty standard upgrade procedure: apt-get install linux-source-2.6.24... more »

Forcing system to save all open files
|
| |
Hello, I am working on a critical LaTeX document these days that takes a lot of work and I would prefer not to lose any (or at least much) work at any time. However, thanks to a bug in the atheros wireless driver of my network card, my system undergoes intermittent, unpredictable freezes. This is a confirmed bug. Solution unknown. Nothing I can do about it.... more »

dm-crypt - Possible to Change Cipher or Hash?
|
| |
Currently I'm using: Cipher name: aes (256-bits) Cipher mode: cbc-essiv:sha256 On an encrypted volume. Is it possible to non-destructively change the cipher mode digest from sha256 to sha512 in a non-destructive fashion? What about changing the cipher from AES-256 to AES-128, just for giggles, or maybe to twofish, can that be done non-destructively?... more »

email failure to send
|
| |
I have recently installed Debian (kernel 2.6.18-486) on two computers and they both exhibit the same problem, failure to send email through stmp. Actually I have installed two copies of Debian and two copy of mepis (kernel 2..6.15-27-desktop) on two different machines, all of which have exhibited the same problem.... more »

Are the Dove & Weasel to die?
|
| |
...The problem Debian has with Firefox and Thunderbird is that the logos and names cannot be freely used, and are non-free in this respect. The names and logos also serve as registered Trademarks in most areas of the world. This problem is backed by a stipulation from Mozilla that Firefox may only be called Firefox if it uses their logos and I believe the source... more »

Ubuntu home server "suspends" itself
|
| |
My sister's Ubuntu Gutsy home server, just a basic Ubuntu Gutsy install with GUI, somehow magically goes to "sleep" every so often for unknown reasons (suspend). It is a little Dell desktop. It can wake up if power button is pressed. But this is not the behaviour that one expects from servers. We want it to be up all the time. What gives?... more »
