I am scheduled to give a 45 min presentation about public speaking at a
professional as association meeting next week. To help rehearse, I had
offered for the Monday club to be on the agenda for the 15 minute
keynote speech of the professional speaker manual. They accepted. I took
my 45 minute speech and adapted the first part to a 15 min speech. The
speech at the first club was a hit. Everything worked well. I got one
comment that made polish the beginning further for more impact th next time.
I had offered to make speech at the Tue club, too, but they didn't gave
me an answer. At their meeting, one person on the agenda for a speech
canceled the speech and I offered to make a speech. They offered me 5-7
min. I condensed 15 min speech on the spot to about 8 min. The delivery
took 10 min. The speech went well. I missed the punch line for the
ending story but nobody really noticed because it was a story and not a
joke. I would have probably stayed on time if I had time in advance to
test the material for that time. I was voted the best speaker even
though I went over time. They gave a ribbon and a trophy to the best
speaker, the best evaluator, and the best table topic. I said "wow, I
like this trophy." Before I could pack away the trophy, they took it
back--they take the trophies back!

Sounds like a rewarding trip that streched your abilities
and showed just what a seasoned Toastmaster can do on short
notice.

Congratulations! Most clubs that give trophy for Best Speaker of the
meeting take it back. Some let the winner take it home until the next
meeting.

Congrats on doing a great job under less than ideal circumstances. It
really shows your adaptability.
I've never cared for the "perpetual trophy" thing exactly because it has to
be taken back. We tried in one of my clubs to let the winner keep it for a
week, but most of the time it was forgotten or the speaker was absent for
the next meeting. We switched over to ribbons.

At one of my clubs we have both.
There is a small trophy that stays with the club at the end
of the meeting, and a ribbon the speaker gets to take home.
I've been in clubs that have used trophies. Most of the people brought
it back. Now and then, someone would forget. The idea behind the
trophy is it sits on your desk for a week. When people ask you about
it, it an opening to tell them about your club.
My club currently uses cards. They are like ribbons. They get tucked
into the manual that you won it on and no one else sees it.

I did the 40 min presentation and it was a success. I used the audience
to demonstrate some of my points. I opened the speech with story to make
a point. Then I told them what I was going to tell them, then assigned
four volunteer to "participate". One volunteer to speak for 30 seconds
and summarize the first part of the program, another to speak and
summarize the second part, a third as timekeeper and a fourth to
distribute evaluation forms and collect them at the end. The program was
followed-up by Q&A. That part contributed more to its overall success
and helped provide additional points that I didn't have time to include
in the speech.
As usual, I recommended that folks join a Toastmasters club near them. I
had offered to the district to distribute Toastmasters brochures or old
Toasmasters magazines if they provided me the stuff but they didn't take
me up on the offer.
I think my participation in the Fine speakers Bureau(tm) has been very
helpful in getting me speaking engagements by adding credibility about
my credentials and ability. Of course, one has to deliver, too!
I did a course for one adult school on Monday, another one for a
diffrent adult school is scheduled later this month, and I am scheduled
to delver a technical workshop on hazardous metrials for the Mid-Atlatic
Health and Safety Expo and Conference in Atlantic City, NJ next week.
