It is good to see someone posting here again. The Google Group is better
than nothing, but I find it very cumbersome, and much prefer this format.

God, Queen and country! Beware Anti-Christ rising!
Remember Christ is the reason for the season.
How has the spam looked here lately? My news server has been better than
most at filtering, so I can't tell how it looks for everyone else.
I'll post here in duplicate of what I posted in the google group - won my
division contest today, so I'm headed to district for the fourth time. I've
come 2nd twice and 3rd once at district, so we'll see how things go this
time.
Colin
I killfiled the cross-posters as they came along. I haven't seen any new
ones, or any other posts here, for several days now.

Congratulations, Colin!
I won an Area Evaluation contest in one of my Districts last weekend. That
Division contest will be on April 5. I'll be competing at another Area
contest, in another District, in Tall Tales and International next Saturday.
Joy
Excellent! I love the eval contest Great job! Man, you are busy this contest
season :-)

What is cumbersome about the other group? I know I, for the most part,
just post by replying to the posts I get by email.
As for this group - I see little to no TM activity, and an average of
two spam posts a week, but the flaming is done. I've considered
encouraging others to return here, but TMPrime has its advantages over
this one, with its pages and files options - and you never know when
the flamers are going to return.
It's clear by how well TMPrime has developed that 4 out 5 tm'ers just
don't have the tech skills or time or whatever to avoid the spamming
that took place here.
I miss the way this group used to be - we still haven't quite
recaptured it at TMPrime - several of the holdouts were heavy posters.
I don't know if there is a perfect solution out there.
Rich.

With this group, I have it set up so I only see posts I haven't already
read. That makes it easy to see which I want to respond to. With the other
group, I get the digest by email, sort through what I get to see which
messages I haven't yet read. Then, if I want to respond to one, I have to
go to the group, log in, and find the post I want to respond to. I'm much
more likely to respond over here.

That's true, but I don't like the idea of letting them take over what was a
good group that many people enjoyed. Other groups I subscribe to have had
spammers, but we have weathered them. One group hijacks a spam thread and
turns it into a recipe exchange. I'd rather ignore or fight back than run
away.

It may have something to do with the program they use for newsgroups. I use
OE, and find it very easy to "Block sender". I have very little technical
savvy, but I can manage that.

There probably isn't a perfect solution.

The spam is not present until there are legitimate postings. Due to
yesterday's (Saturday's) traffic, there are 4+ spam messages. So,
sad to say, but my guess is that the problem still exists and moving
back will be just as painful as before.
John.
Congratulations, Joy! Three different contests has got to be a bit of a
challenge. My hat is off to you.

I took a stab at adding the other speech contests. If anyone has better
ideas on how to organize the information, I'd certainly encourage you to do
what you can to make it more useful.

I haven't seen much at all. But then, my newsserver has a
very good spam filter. Maybe too good a spam filter.

Congratulations Colin.
That would be sad.
Like Joy, I prefer the Usenet format of
alt.org.toastmasters. I have my newsreader set up so I only
see messages I haven't read.
Me not black.
What can I say, these are the things that get me excited in life :-)
Colin
By having the new posts delivered to my inbox as individual mail messages, I
only see the new items that I haven't read. I can see that having the
digest delivered would be a pain. I only do that with email lists where I
reply very infrequently.
I do like the new forum and that I get the posts in email. Having another
place to go look for messages was something that I disliked about usenet.

I use Thunderbird and I can do the same thing. Read News used to have a
way of blocking e-mail that's cross posted. If I could block cross
postings, that would eliminate almost all of the spam.

Congratulations.
I didn't compete this year. Our Area Governor has scheduled our
contests at 6:30 PM. That means I need to arrive at 6:00 PM. That
means I'd have to leave work early and get stuck in peak traffic.
The Area Governors have been scheduling early, since we had a contest
run late. That contest ran late because we had two contests together.
I was the contest Toastmaster. I raised the issue as soon as I found
out how many people would be participating. Having two contests at the
same time only works if both Areas are going to have a poor turnout.
Thank you, Mark. Competing in Tall Tales and International at the same
contest will definitely be a challenge. My International speech is actually
a midstream change. My original speech lost at both clubs where I tried it,
although I considered it better than at least one speech that beat me. I
was working on a different speech for the club where I got ill, so that is
the one I developed for Area. I tested it on the club where I couldn't
compete, and got a good response, along with a couple of good suggestions.
Joy
Different strokes for different folks. ;-)
I subscribe to several newsgroups, so it is easy for me to check this
newsgroup when I check the others. I get a lot of email, and even with a
spam filter, there is new spam every day. If I got posts as individual
messages, that would increase the email I have to sort through, and make it
possible to inadvertently block someone I want to hear from.
Joy
A newsreader lets me sort the posts by subject as well, so
if there is a thread I don't want to follow, it's easier to
skip the messages.
A group appearing as either a digest or as individual
e-mails is a bit less flexible that way.
Gmail threads email messages very effectively. (Sometime too effectively.)
