I believe Microsoft should take full responsibility for the faulty design of
Windows and recall every last copy of Windows ever sold. Buyers should get
a working, safe, secure operating system in return.

That guy did not write anything new and nothing that commom sense would'nt
tell you. People are going to continue to use M$ & Windows because of it's
ease of use. Linux programs are a nightmare for a newbie to use and install
the required programs that Windows comes with. and Mac is just not
fashionable to own, and in my view is for real old fart and fartresses who
have $$$. Apple has a very small software display at any software store, and
who can afford them???Mebbe you, not me. Besides, SP2 fixes a main security
problem (one that users could do anyway before going online)...Namely: the
firewall is auto on...AND Windows updates are free...Apple updates are
NOT..heh...

And it's not a damn crime, nor does it mean those who use it are
stoopid. I pondered whether I could, or should, figure out Linux, then
said why could, should or would I?

Oh yeah, it just sounds savvier to use Linux, but hey, Webteevee tends
to strip one of all pretension. Well, maybe not everyone, of
course...<g>

Geez, hate to admit it, but I've used macs at work and school, my
daughter even has one, but their unpopularity is probably the first
reason I don't have a Mac.

Yep. I haven't taken it yet.

And thanks for your down-to-earth statements.

Thanks Fester, It read more like an opinion piece to me. I got the XP SP2
the other night and so far no major issues with it.

Since XP SP2 isn't in the normal, Windows Update component (yet), how
did you receive it? Also, how long did it take you to download the
thing (dial-up, broadband)?

Just curious.

You can download the full version here.

This is every patch and update since SP1. I think it was 265mb. Don't even
try it on dial-up. It would take about 10 hours or more.

I installed on my desktop and laptop and it went very smooth.

i dont know about that, it appears that more people are biginning to try
linux & dumping windows, especially people who are serious about the
protecting the data they have on their boxes. also, linux is secure & easy

how? especially the GUI programs, they are point & click, just like windows
except for a couple of things, they are FREE, & they are more stable then
any windows programs.
another thing....what does windows come with? nothing. notepad & wordpad
cannot be regarded as office suites.
when you install any of the major linux distos, you get at least
openoffice.org & if you have the KDE desktop, you get KOffice as well.

Gas Bag Alert! Gas Bag Alert!

The following post may be too meaningless for the general reader. It's

I thought it was one of the better "anti-Microsoft" rants. It didn't
explode into the usual hyperbole to which a lot of advocates of other
operating systems descend (and vice-versa).

Sometimes I visit comp.os.linux.advocacy for entertainment purposes as
well as a bit of learning. I am always shocked by some of the posts
there from seemingly intelligent people, detailing the "horrors" of
Windows -- along with an equal number of posts from seemingly
intelligent people, ranting against the [perceived] failings of Linux.

Almost every day, I am installing some version of Windows on various
types of machines. The processor can be either AMD or Intel,
motherboards of varying manufacture and age, etc. I almost never have
any problems, yet I always hear someone say that Windows is difficult
to install in comparison to some flavor of Linux. On the other hand,
the only version of Linux I've ever had problems with would be Knoppix
on a "live" CD (it doesn't install to the hard drive) -- it gave me
issues regarding network connections using the Knode newsreader along
with some other, trivial matters. Regardless, it was just something I
was playing with and not a serious consideration by any means.

Xandros is my current, experimental distro. I say "experimental"
because I haven't found anything yet that I would view as a permanent
choice for my desktop as an alternative to Windows. Admittedly,
everything prior to XP was (to put it mildly), not "up to snuff" where
system crashes are concerned. Why should the entire OS go down along
with the app which crashed? Nonsense.

Now, I am not a "shill" for Microsoft (as some persistent wag in this
newsgroup would say) -- I simply look at this from a realistic
standpoint. If I want to be able to have the most choice of software
and hardware in the marketplace, I have to use Windows. Not because
there's anything "better" about it. I like to play FPS games (Far Cry,
Painkiller, Doom 3, Quake, etc.) and Linux just doesn't give me that
option.

The machine I have Xandros on has two drives -- one with XP and one
with Xandros. I use a switch to choose which OS to boot (using cable
select) when I turn on the machine (I should point out that I don't
like dual-boot setups with multiple OSs on a single drive). I'm not
ashamed to say that 95% of the time, the switch is on XP. I only turn
it to Xandros when the tweaker in me comes out and I want to
experience the joys of command console computing. <g>

GUIs are (and will always be) where most people spend their time.
That's why Apple is so successful where "ease of use" is the factor.
No one can argue against the iLife integration in comparison to *any*
other product available. It's simply a fact. Apple's failings to gain
respectable market share are due to other factors, largely determined
by Steve Jobs and his "hands off my machine" attitude. <g>

Windows' failings are due, in large part, to its
backward-compatibility -- people still expect to be able to run that
favorite word processor that went out of style in 1985. Sony
understood how valuable such a "commodity" is when it came out with
its PS2 game console. Not only can you play all the new, whiz-bang
stuff that takes advantage of its graphics capabilities, but all the
old stuff as well. Very appealing to the consumer. If Microsoft is
smart, they will keep this in mind with their new X-Box.

Now, where is this apparent (long-winded) digression leading, you ask?
Good question! The answer lies in people's expectations from a
consumer standpoint.

The most "bang for the buck" is still in Microsoft's pocket -- along
with all the bad things which are a result of using an operating
system with bugs and security deficiencies, not originally designed to
connect with more than a single, other computer. It (Windows) clung to
DOS for far longer than it should for the very reasons outlined above.
Apple never went to the same lengths and the benefits of a stable,
secure OS are the result -- even though they constantly incur the
wrath of users facing the prospect of having to upgrade their hardware
in order to use OS "whatever."

Linux on the desktop doesn't suffer from any of these things -- other
than acceptance from the consumer. It's not ready for "prime time" nor
will it be, until it gives the consumer the same range, ease-of-use,
and assurances that there is going to be long-term support.

Right now, Linux is too "piece-meal" as to what flavor is going to be
there for the long term. Linux will have to be a commercial entity of
some kind in order to satisfy the need on the part of the consumer to
place "blame" for any given problem which might arise. They want a
toll-free telephone number at their disposal. They want something of a
"money back guarantee" if they're not satisfied. What they *don't*
want is to be told, "it's your fault" or, "you can find an answer to
your problem by doing a search on the Internet" or some such.

Manufacturers selling systems with Linux pre-loaded are going to have
to "be there" when the customer needs hand holding of some kind. The
manufacturer _can't_ abandon them when it appears their foray into the
world of alternative operating systems was not a good business
decision. If they do that, then the consumer will be wary of ever
exercising the option of "choice" again. It will be a detrimental
experience to the consumer, the seller, and the open source
community-at-large. Red Hat comes to mind in that regard. Are they
going to be there, or not? They've made some decisions that cast doubt
in that area.

Bottom line: Everything about Microsoft versus Linux is a bunch of
hooey. Capitalism is the driving force here and nothing more. If that
makes the world-at-large "Win-Droids" then that's the way it is.

Company IT departments can deal with choosing one OS over another at
their whim because that's their job. Regardless of what they choose,
the IT department is there to make sure it works.

The consumer has no desire to know everything that a company IT
department knows. They just want what they want, and they want it now.
Give them that, and you're the winner -- no "ifs," "ands," or "buts"
about it.

I like Linux, but it's not for everyone. It's more secure because Linux
users are paranoid(almost) about security, but EASY....no way...installing

There are some advantages to RPM, but this ain't one of them. You're
very unlikely to corrupt the kernel unless you compile and install a new
kernel.

That's what you get for buying your keyboard at Ringling Brothers Clown
Store. Most of us don't have lights all over our keyboards *to* flash.

There's no real difference between doing a Fedora or SuSE install and
doing an XP install. If you know what you're doing, they are both
tedious and boring. If you don't know what you're doing, you spend 30
minutes looking for the "any" key, and finally give up and tap the space
bar.

> I can just plug in my digital camera,

I couldn't find the CD-ROM so I downloaded the drivers for the Canon
LiDE-30 scanner and tried to install it on my wife's XP puter. Then it
was a 52-minute call to Canon tech support to find out how to
*correctly* install the thing.

Glad your copy of XP "just makes it work".

> Linux don't.....you have to find the program

Perhaps you can tell me how to file an amended 2002 tax return in Tax
Cut. XP says the program has known problems with XP and I should get an
updated program from the vendor. But the 2004 tax software can't read
the 2002 tax data, modify the data, and prepare a return according to
the 2002 tax rules.

Does that make Windows *evil*? No. But Microsoft hires
wet-behind-the-ears geniuses, and overwork and underpay them so they
leave in a couple of years. The result is that they don't understand how
damnably important backwards compatibility is.

Why not? If it's profitable for Sun to give away StarOffice/OpenOffice,
why shouldn't Microsoft want to be profitable, too?

All you had to do was plug it in and XP would have loaded the drivers for
that canon. you probably downloaded an unsigned driver. XP don't like dat!

Well, this 'idiot' that's so vewy afwaid of Linux started downloading SP2
the other night, only to read that it will render Norton's Antivirus useless
unless you update the program. Jeesh!

btw, I got offered it thru automatic updates, and it started downloading
pretty fast on a dialup connection...thank God it didn't remind me to
download it again tonight! (60% to go...)

Maybe problems have already been found? (JMO)

You mean, not a hole, but a crater? Naah. MIcrosoft surely wouldn't make
the mistake of making something read/write that really ought to be
read-only, in something like WBEM, would they?

And if they did, perhaps it's because they've been sidetracked by their
legal issues. In the latest chapter, Microsoft is busy trying to explain
to the British government that Linux really more expensive to run than
Windows, and it has nothing to do with the fact they they were running
Linux on a mainframe while running Windows on a PC.

I think they should do a cost comparison between my running Fedora on an
old 1 GHz desktop at my house, versus XP on a new 3 GHz laptop at Bill &
Melinda's house - and include the cost of the houses in the comparison.

Maybe they wanted to show that a PC with measly, dual Xeon processors,
running Windows is superior to an IBM mainframe running Linux? In
other words, that Linux *crippled* the mainframe.

Hey! I'm kidding here. It was a weird ad and it's a wonder that anyone
with half a brain didn't notice the inconsistency in the comparison.

LOL Paul, great gif! ;-)

And you're right about the read/write stuff....the update was installing
itself as it was downloading.

But there is some GOOD news about this update (besides what NightSpirit
wrote)....there's a new choice in the automatic update section that allows
you to tell it to download only and install when you tell it to.

Glad they made THAT change...I just did it! ;-)
