Sorry, I can't work with your black background, so here is a new post.

Hi. I spent $16 on a color cartridge from eBay about a month ago.
Printed 10 color pages and approx. 20 B&W pages around that time. I
haven't used it since.
I tried to print a letter today and I got this message:

"ink catridge not found"
"make sure ink cartridges are istalled correctly".

I checked the color cartridge and there is ink in it. I have it set to
print B&W. I even changed it to print in color but same error message
each time.

I have a Lexmark Z212 color jetprinter

What could be wrong?

Jane

...Firstly, there is no Lexmark model#-Z212; -- My guess is that you
made a typo, and meant to say model#-Z12 instead (see link here):

...As for what might be causing your problem; -- Well, it could be any,
of many things, such as:

a.) ....Defective cartridge (return it, or exchange it, if possible).

b.) ....Incorrect cartridge/part (see Lexmark Z12 link above).

c.) ....Temporary, WebTV glitch.

d.) ....WebTV server, and/or WebTV Z12 driver problem.

e.) ....Clogged printer heads, and/or jets.

f.) ....Printer cartridge improperly seated.

g.) ....Dirty electrical contacts.

...So as a solution, try some of the suggestions copied below, and see
if any helps solve your problem(s).

...Also, as has already been suggested, you might try the firewalled
WebTV printer oriented newsgroups at:
"news:alt.discuss.webtv.printerhelp" for expert WebTV printer help.

3.) ....Pull gently on the ribbon cable connected to the carrier until
the carrier is accessible.

4.) ....Remove the cartridges.

5.) ....Using a dry clean cloth, wipe the contacts of the carrier gently
from top to bottom.

6.) ....Repeat step 5 on the second carrier slot (where applicable).

7. ) ....Re-insert the cartridges and close the lid.

8.) ....Reconnect the printer to the mains supply and power on the
printer.

If your cartridges are not being detected when they are snapped in, do
the following:

1.) ....Open the cover of the printer and unsnap both cartridges.

2.) ....Snap them back in after a few seconds. Close the cover.

3.) ....Repeat these steps (1-2) three or more times in succession.

And from the: "fixyourownprinter.com", here are some additional
suggestions at:

http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/23022

Its also possible that the new cartridge is actually bad, it happens.

.Here's some possible Ink Cartridge problems and you may simply have to
eliminate these areas to try and find out just what is causing your
printers problem: A bad cartridge; an expired cartridge [check the age
date on the cartridge or on the box it came in]; Possible dirty
electrical contacts or electrical chips [if your printers cartridges
have elec contacts or elec chips] for the ink cartridge causing
problems; Sometimes even that the pull tape was not removed correctly;
Even corrupted Printer Drivers causing problems

With your printer turned off and unplugged, simply try cleaning the
electrical contacts/chips again, carefully and gently, with Distilled
Water on Q-Tips or on a lint free rag. Its possible that the electrical
contacts on the ink cartridge, or inside the Print Cartridge Holder
Assembly, may simply be dirty. Using damp Q-tips [not wet or dripping],
gently and carefully wipe off the copper colored electrical plates on
the cartridges and the electrical contacts inside the holder assy.

Then clean off the face of the Print Head Assembly thats located on the
end of the ink cartridge, where the ink comes out. Its best to use
"Distilled Water", because it has less chemicals and minerals in it,
than tap water and regular tap water can actually cause additional
problems. Use new dry Q-Tips to dry off all the electrical contacts
after cleaning...The only way to really eliminate a possible bad
cartridge [even if it happens to be a new cartridge], is to actually
replace it, or test it in another printer that uses the same cartridge
and was working ok with its own cartridges installed. Unfortunatly, that
is usually not practical, unless you know someone that has the same
printer or uses the same cartridge in their printer.

.Some people report getting an ink cartridge to start working again, by
simply holding the Printhead under running hot water, until the ink
starts to flow out. Others report putting a small amount of water [1/4
to 1/2 inch deep] in a coffee cup and then heating it in the microwave
for a minute and then standing the printhead in the hot water for 5 or
10 minutes, to soak. Either way, be sure and dry off that cartridge
after the soaking and then try running the Print Cartridge Cleaning Test
a few times to see if the ink starts to work again.

h.) ....An old cartridge. These days, many inkjet cartridges are
manufactured with a "drop dead date" in the circuitry, so that you
have to have to replace the cartridge with a new one, instead of
continuing to refill the old one. The clock on the limited lifetime
doesn't start when you install the cartridge. It starts when the
cartridge is installed.

Many (but by no means all) ebaY sellers are dealing in distressed
stock - stuff that has been sitting too long in a store or warehouse,
and they want to get rid of it while it still has *some* value. Your
chances of getting a short-date ink cart are much higher on ebaY and
in stores that don't turn over their stock quickly.
