Why is this being advertised as a FREE upgrade. I called Comcast
about a modem swap (Seattle). They told me its free for the first 3
months. After that it's a higher monthly cost. So, it ain't free.
(They just 'back load' the fee into the rest of the payments!

What is being advertised as free? Most any 'free' usually has an
asterisk pointing to small print telling you what it really costs.

What is going up in 3 months? The modem rental fee?

Buy your own modem then no more rental charges.
Zoom 5341J seems to be a good choice.

I've seen some positive reviews. However, any number of people noted that
prior Zoom modems aren't long-lived workhorses like Motorola Surfboards were.
So the positives about the possibility of this modem supporting niceties
like 8x4 channel bonding should be considered along with the negatives
about whether the modem won't require replacement before that's available
from your head end.

I have a Zoom 56k dialup modem circa 2000 and it still works.
Once, just for giggles, I hooked it up to Comcast Digital Voice and got
a 53k connection.

No more than you offered, sockpuppet. But I thought you were speaking
from personal experience and were satisfied. Surely, you weren't posting
random crap to Usenet just to hear yourself talk.

I've had the Zoom for a year or two and haven't had any problems. It
replaced a Linksys that was only DOCSIS 2.1.
Surfboard seems to be the more common device, perhaps because it's what
Comcast usually rents (or maybe that should be past tense, I don't know
what they give out these days).

Yah, I have a box full of old technology.
As I recall, I've had a Motorola 4100, a 5100, an Arris 502, a Cisco
DPC3000 and now using a Zoom 5341.
None of the previous modems failed, they all became obsolete.
