Sir John Dutton Clerk of Penicuik, 10th Baronet, CBE, VRD, FRSE,
Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian, 1972-92 [Vice-Lieutenant 1965-72],
Commodore, Royal Naval Reserve, died 25 October, 2002, at home,
Penicuik House, Penicuik, Midlothian. He was 85.

He was born 30 January, 1917, the only son of Sir George James Robert
Clerk of Penicuik, 9th Baronet [1876-1943], by his wife, the former
Hon. Mabel Honor Dutton, sister of the 6th Lord Sherborne, DSO.

The Clerk family [pronounced *Clark*] is descended from John Clerk,
distinguished for his loyalty and attachment to Mary Stuart. His
great-grandson, John, was created a Baronet by Charles II.

The 10th Bart was educated at Stowe.

Career: Brigadier, 1973-89, Ensign 1989-96, Lieutenant, from 1996, of
Queen's Body Guard for Scotland, Royal Company of Archers; Justice of
the Peace, 1955; Deputy Lieutenant, 1956 [Midlothian]. FRSE, 1977;
CBE, 1966.

He succeeded to the baronetcy, 21 November, 1943, and married 10 June,
1944, Evelyn Elizabeth, elder daughter of William Robertson.

He leaves a widow, and two sons, and two daughters. The elder son,
Robert Maxwell Clerk, Younger of Penicuik, OBE, born 3 April, 1945,
now succeeds to the Baronetcy.
