Charles Powell Lum, former art director at the Washington Star, died of
pneumonia April 8, 2005, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster,
Maryland, at the age of 97.

Mr. Powell, a North Carolina native, was raised in Petersburg, Va. He
graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in art.

He was a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II.

He worked briefly as a department-store window dresser. He then worked
for the Washington Star until retiring in 1972.

Mr. Powell was an avid poet, painter and gourmet cook. He was awarded
"Best of Show" in the 1994 Senior Citizens Fine Arts Competition in
Montgomery County for an oil painting titled "Indian Flower Mart."

He lived in Olney, Maryland, Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Hillandale,
Maryland, before moving to Eldersburg, Maryland, seven years ago to
live with his grandson Russell.

His wife of 50 years, Lucile Lum, died in 1982. A son, Jeff Lum, died
in 1998, and a daughter, Allison Lum, died in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, whom he married in 1984, Ariele Cambron Lum
of Eldersburg, Maryland; a daughter from his first marriage, Barbara
Houghton of Doylestown, Pennsylvaniaa; four grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
