Alan Arthur Bates was born 17 February, 1934, and educated at the Herbert Strutt Grammar School, Belper, Derbyshire; and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

He married in 1970, Victoria Ward, by whom he had twin sons (one deceased). Mrs Bates died in 1992.

My main memory of Alan Bates was in Women in Love (one of the finest British films), I also remember seeing him in 'An Englishman Abroad'. He was one of the 'new' actors in the 1960s and will be very sadly missed. Regards Mike.

Weren't two of the other classically trained 'new' actors of that generation Albert Finney (b. 1936), Peter O'Toole (b. 1932), Richard Harris (b. 1930, d. 2002) and Tom Courtenay (b. 1937)? Or were there others? b
