By Liam Paterson
IT has been reported that Britain's oldest veteran of the Normandy
landings died on Monday aged 105.
Jock Wilson, from Dunbar in East Lothian, was an observer for the 79th
Regiment Royal Artillery. He made his landing at Juno Beach and took
part in the subsequent savage fighting in the beachhead that ended in
one of the biggest defeats for German forces in WWII.

Twice wounded in the war, he received the Military Medal for his
actions and was also awarded France's highest decoration – the Legion
d'Honneur – by Jacques Chirac at the 60th anniversary of the D-Day
landings in 2004.

Mr Wilson had only recently celebrated his 105th birthday where he was
presented with a congratulatory telegram from the Queen – his second
after also being honoured after his 100th birthday.

Upon receiving news that islanders had made the remarks below, and after
consultations with my Joint Chiefs of Staff, being briefed by members of my
Cabinet and many telephone conversations with various World Leaders, I have
come to the following conclusions:

> He was NOT a World War I veteran.

Given his age, Jock Wilson *could* have served in WWI, but I can't find any
proof of his service during that time.

Here's a pic of him back in 2004, he still looked to be a quite chipper a
fellow:

Do you know that for a fact or are you just guessing based on his age?

15-year-old soldiers were not unknown in WW1 : see the caption to the 7th

Jock Wilson had previous service, as shown here:

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/topstories/Normandy-hero-dies-just-weeks.4545008.jp

pay attention to this sentence in the fifth paragraph from the end :

"Mr Wilson was 36 when the war broke out in 1939 and originally deemed
too old to fight but, by 1941, he was called up due to his earlier
service in the Territorial Army. In 2004 he was awarded the Legion
d'Honneur, France's highest decoration, for his war effort "

but (and it grieves me to say it) "islanders" is right--Jock didn't
serve in WWI, but as this article will state:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_20040602/ai_n12789561

he enlisted in the Scottish Home Guard at 18 (1921) and served for
nine years. He expected to be part of "Dad's Army"--the Home Guard--as
he thought he would be considered too old, but he was called up to
active service.

so there's one for you, islanders, but even a rundown clock tells the
correct time twice a day.

I do have other things to do, but if you're still around when I
return, maybe we'll have another go, ok?

Until then, let me leave you with this question: When you go to the
mind reader, do you pay half price?

Inquiring minds may want to know!

Or then again...

oh you're still here! Still thinking of me, I see. Well, I do have to
admit that I was thinking about you earlier, pretty much all day, in
fact--I was at the zoo.

You seen to have this problem with women; well, all I can tell you is:

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful; hate me because your boyfriend
thinks so.
