Noah Carroll New, a Marine Corps major general who retired in 1981 as
director of the Naval Council of Personnel Boards, died July 25, 2006,
at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, from pneumonia,
at the age of 82.
Gen. New, an Atlanta, Georgia, native, joined the Marine Corps after
World War II. He was a helicopter and test pilot early in his career.
During the Vietnam War, he was commanding officer of a Marine Corps
aircraft group.
Promoted to brigadier general in 1973, he held many administrative
roles, including deputy commanding general of Fleet Marine Force,
Atlantic, in Norfolk, Virginia.
His decorations included the Legion of Merit with combat "V," the
Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.
During his military career, he graduated from Georgia Tech (1949),
received a doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1963) and a master's degree in
international affairs from George Washington University (1968).
In retirement, he sold real estate at Arlington Realty and Better Homes
Realty.
His interests included piano, bridge and skiing.
His wife, Ellen Wiley New, died in 1982. Two sons also died, Thomas A.
New about 1960 and Steven F. New in 1982.
Survivors include two children, Elizabeth Thompson of Poway,
California, and John D. New of Orlando, Florida; a sister; and four
grandchildren.
