Robert S. "Tex" Nelson, Sr. unexpectedly passed away July 22, 2011.
He was born on August 7, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, to Flay D. and Margie V.
Nelson.
He was a natural athlete and member of the State Champion Adamson High
School Baseball Team. Dizzy Dean visited one of their games and thrilled Bob
by telling him, "Son, I ain't NEVER seen a baseball hit that hard or that
far!"
He joined the Baltimore Orioles Baseball Team after graduating from Adamson
High School in 1955, where he got his nickname "Tex" from his roommate,
Brooks Robinson. He was with the organization for nine years until injuries
forced his retirement.
He returned to Dallas and went to work for ETMF/ABF trucking industry, where
he retired after 30 years. Bob also enjoyed being a troop scout master for
the boy scouts and singing with the Champion Award-Winning 160 voice
barbershop chorus, The Vocal Majority. Bob was also a Mason, and a member of
the Dallas Elks Lodge #71 since 1985.
Bob was a kindhearted, sweet natured gentle giant of a man who was as
American as they come, who enjoyed donating to a variety of charities. He
enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and sharing stories with his
grandchildren. He especially loved having a beer or two while watching
baseball on TV. Bob made friends wherever he went!, and will be deeply
missed!
He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Doris Jo.
He is survived by his six children, Robert Nelson, Jr. and wife, Kathy, of
Caddo Mills, Texas, Laurie Woody and husband, Dennis, of Sunnyvale, Texas,
Cherrie Grant of Mesquite, Texas, Kelley Goodson and husband, Jon, of
Forney, Texas, Tim Goodrich of Mesquite, Texas, and Ginny Phillips of Caney
City, Texas; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a nephew,
Kevin Glover of Tallahany, Oklahoma.
