American Indian artist dies from internal hemorrhaging at 53

SANTA FE A Santa Fe artist who exhibited his colorful American
Indian-inspired paintings internationally has died.

Dan Viets Lomahaftewa died late last week from internal hemorrhaging.
He was 53.

Lomahaftewa was buried yesterday morning outside his family's village
of Shungopavi in Second Mesa, Arizona.

Lomahaftewa was known for his colorful mix of traditional Hopi images
and contemporary painting styles.

In 1993, Lomahaftewa was selected as the official Indian Market poster
artist.

Born to a Hopi father and Choctaw mother, Lomahaftewa grew up in
Phoenix. He spent childhood summers with his grandfather on the Hopi
reservation.

He received first place in painting at both the 1989 and 1990 Indian
Markets.

Lomahaftewa also was a traditional singer and drummer.
