Bank teller Katherin Shuffield has lost the twins she was carrying when
she was shot during a robbery Tuesday morning in Indianapolis.

Her family and authorities had said the bullets missed the
five-month-old fetuses, but complications set in and doctors decided to
deliver them prematurely late last night. One was born dead and the
other died shortly after birth.

Autopsies will be performed to determine how the twins died.

In a statement, her husband, Jason, said his 30-year-old wife remained
in critical but stable condition at Methodist Hospital.

"Katherin's recovery is our top priority and she continues to receive
the best possible care," he said. "Her comfort has been aided by her
mother, a native of Peru, South America, who was granted a tourist visa
from the U.S. Embassy to help us during this very difficult time. ..."

He offered his thanks to everyone "for their thoughts, prayers and
concerns regarding Katherin's condition."

The gunman, who still has not been found, could now be charged with
felony feticide or other crimes. Had Shuffield been at least seven
months pregnant, the gunman could have been charged with manslaughter.

Indiana defines feticide as a "person who knowingly or intentionally
terminates a human pregnancy with an intention other than to produce a
live birth or to remove a dead fetus commits feticide, a Class C
felony." (Here's more about fetal homicide laws in 35 states.)

Meanwhile, three of four suspects arrested Wednesday as accomplices are
being freed, police said. One suspect fabricated details of the shooting
that implicated the other three.

The Indianapolis Star (a Gannett newspaper) and Associated Press have more.

If it ain't hurricanes, earthquakes, snowstorms, tornadoes, or tsunamis there's
always insanity.
