Al Hodge started playing the guitar in 1963
Veteran Cornish rock musician Al Hodge has died after losing his
two-year fight against cancer.
Regarded by some as the best musician to have come out of the West
Country, Hodge, 55, from Bodmin, performed in pubs and clubs for 40
years.
He released four albums of his own as well as doing session work at
Sawmills studios in Golant.
He toured with stars included Leo Sayer before settling back in
Cornwall where he taught at five county schools.
He said: "I started playing in 1963. Until then, when I was at school,
I wanted to be a painter and decorator.
"Then the music started taking over. My dad bought me a guitar and an
amp and I was so happy I cried."
Last year Hodge reformed his band The Mechanics to mark their 25th
anniversary.
