RICHLAND, Texas -- Rescuers have freed a truck driver who was trapped
for eight hours in the rubble of an highway overpass collapse in
Texas.
But his 19-month-old son, who was a passenger in the tractor-trailer
rig, died in the accident. The driver's injuries don't appear to be
life-threatening.
Officials say the truck was traveling northbound on busy Interstate
45, about 60 miles south of Dallas, when the 41-year-old driver lost
control.
Police say he over-corrected, went over an embankment and hit a
structure supporting the bridge. The bridge collapsed, closing the
southbound lane to traffic.
Southbound traffic on Interstate 45, near Richland, could be detoured
for up to two days.
A Texas public safety official says the streets were wet, but rain was
not falling at the time of the accident.
