Michael Maclagan, CVO, FSA, Richmond Herald of Arms, 1980-89, died 13
August, 2003, aged 89.

He was born 14 April, 1914, the son of Sir Eric Robert Dalrymple
Maclagan, KCVO, (1879-1951), by his wife Helen Elizabeth Lascelles
(who died in 1942).

Michael Maclagan was a paternal grandson of the Most Rev William
Dalrymple Maclagan (1826-1910), Archbishop of York, 1891-1910, who
crowned Queen Alexandra as Queen Consort in August, 1902; by the
Archbishop's second wife, Augusta Anne, a daughter of the 6th Viscount
Barrington.

On his mother's side he was descended from the Earls of Harewood, and
was a nephew of Sir Alan (Tommy) Lascelles, Private Secretary to King
George VI.

He was educated at Winchester College, and Christ Church, Oxford (BA
1st Class Hons Modern History, MA).

Career: Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, 1948; FRHistS, 1961; FSG
1970; FHS 1972; Lecturer, Christ Church, Oxford, 1937-39; Fellow of
Trinity College, 1939-81; since when Emeritus Fellow; Senior Proctor,
1954-55; 2nd Lieutenant, Territorial Army, 1938; served in the Second
World War 1939-46, with the 16/5 Lancers; Major, GSOII War Office;
Slains Pursuivant, 1948-70; Portcullis Pursuivant, 1970-80; Richmond
Herald of Arms, 1980-89; Visiting Professor, University of South
Carolina, 1974; Fellow of Winchester College,1975-89; Senior
Librarian, Oxford Union, 1960-70; Trustee, Oxford Union, 1970-99;
Councillor, Oxford City Borough Council, 1946-74; Sheriff, 1964-65;
Lord Mayor of Oxford, 1970-71; Chairman, Oxford Diocesan Advisory
Committee, 1961-85; Master of Scriveners' Co, 1988-89.

Maclagan was appointed OStJ, 1952; CVO, 1988.

He was twice married, firstly, in 1939, to Brenda Alexander, which
marriage was dissolved by divorce in 1946; secondly, in 1949, to Jean
Elizabeth Brooksbank Garnett, daughter of Lt-Col. W.B. Garnett, DSO.

His second wife predeceased him by 10 days, and he died on the day of
her funeral.

There was a son from the first marriage, and a son (dec.) and two
daughters from the second.
