ANDERSON, S.C. -- A man was killed Sunday when he burned himself and
then fell on a knife he was holding, all in front of his 8- and 10-
year-old sons, according to the Anderson County coroner.
Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Boseman said that Michael Downing, 32,
was grilling food for himself and his sons Sunday afternoon, when he
burned his hand on the grill.
Downing was holding a steak knife at the time, and while reacting to
being burned, he tripped and fell onto the knife.
Downing was able to call 911 and explained what had happened. He was
conscious when paramedics arrived at his home on Northlake Drive in
Anderson. He was transported to AnMed emergency room where he later
died.
Boseman said that the knife went into Downing's chest. An autopsy will
be performed to confirm the exact cause of his death. The sheriff's
office will have a representative present at the autopsy.
