BURKE, ELIZABETH
"BETTY" CARR, 79, of Eustis, FL passed away on Sunday,
August 31, 2008. Mrs. Burke was born on March 31, 1929 in Chicago, IL
to the late Thomas Patrick A. Carr and Helen
(Bilberg) Carr. Miss Carr was a widely publicized Hollywood Starlet of
the 1950's. Although she left professional theater young, she had
racked up an impressive list of credits in motion pictures, on
Broadway, in summer stock, and in national touring companies. She made
ten films in Hollywood, including All Ashore with Mickey Rooney. She
also took part in one of the greatest musical sequences ever filmed -
the barn raising dance in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. She also
worked in New York where she won the leading role of Lola in Damn
Yankees as well as roles in Fanny, Happy Hunting, and Mask and Gown.
When she was just past her mid-twenties, she married Edward Burke, a
tennis pro who had ranked as one of the nation's top amateurs. He was
a New Jersey businessman who had graduated from Rollins College.
Looking for a better year-round climate for her mother and her son,
she came upon Lake County by accident after her husband recommended
moving to Central Florida. After searching several communities in the
area, she fell in love with Lake County and made it her home. In 1976,
she was coaxed out of retirement to play a role in The Boy Friend at
Mount Dora's Ice House Theater. Since then, she has appeared in five
more Ice House productions and four plays at the Bay Street Theater in
Eustis. She also worked as a realtor for Matche Realty in Lake County
for several years. Mrs. Carr Burke was preceded in death by her
husband,
Edward M. Burke, Sr. She is survived by her son, Edward M. Burke, Jr.,
several nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog, Lexie. A Memorial
Service will be held at 10AM Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Allen J.
Harden Funeral Home in Mount Dora. Arrangements by ALLEN J. HARDEN
FUNERAL HOME, 1800 N. Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757. Phone:
352-383-8178.
