I almost deleted this unread because the original subject line didn't
say why he was worth reading about, so I've retitled it to make it
clearer. Thanks for posting it deb...@comcast.net

Legendary mountaineer author dies (BBC)

Syd Scroggie became well known as a hill walker
The legendary blind and one-legged Scottish mountain man Syd Scroggie
has died at the age of 86. In spite of his disabilities he achieved
success as an author, poet and renowned hill walker.

Mr Scroggie was born in Canada in 1919 but moved to Dundee soon after.
His father was killed in World War I.

He joined the forces himself at the outbreak of World War II, serving
with the Cameronians and then as an officer in the Lovat Scouts.

Published poet

Just weeks before the war ended he was injured by an anti-personnel
mine in Northern Italy, losing his right leg and the sight of both
eyes.

However, once back in Scotland Mr Scroggie achieved fame by resuming
mountaineering, guided by friends, and became a published poet and
author.

He appeared on This is Your Life in 1964 and in 2000 climbed a local
hill at the age of 81 to witness a cairn being erected in recognition
of his achievements.
