Faulkner's daughter, Jill Summers, dies in Virginia

Associated Press - April 25, 2008 2:34 PM ET

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - William Faulkner's daughter, Jill Faulkner
Summers, died this week at her home, Knole Farm in Charlottesville,
Virginia. She was 74.

Summers had suffered a severe stroke in November 2006, according to her
obituary posted online.

Born and raised in Oxford, Mississippi, Summers was the last surviving
member of the Nobel-prize-winning authors immediate family.

Faulkner and his wife, Estelle, had two children, although their first
child, a daughter named Alabama Faulkner, died nine days after being born in
1931.

Summers was instrumental in ensuring much of her fathers estate, including
his Rowan Oak home in Oxford and his original manuscripts and other writings
would be preserved.

She sold Rowan Oak to the University of Mississippi in 1972 and, in 1 of her
last visits to Oxford, she donated her fathers Bible to Rowan Oak in 2005.

As was her father's wish, she donated many of his manuscripts and personal
papers to the University of Virginia over the years.

She is survived by her three children.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Church in Charlottesville on
May 2nd. Other details of her funeral were unavailable.
