A lot of people, you mention their name and I cannot
visualize them, but he immediately popped into my head.

He was great in McCale's Navy.

Carl Ballentine was one of the greats of comedy magic. His act didn't
change much over the past 60 years or so, because it didn't have to.
I've seen him perform several times and had as many conversations with
him as those performances. That's because he was one of the sweetest
guys you'll find in this show business. He would always find the time
for those who wanted to talk comedy and magic.

A long life he led, but I'm still sad to hear of his passing. He was
one of the greats, I repeat. Mac King, Penn & Teller, Michael Finney,
and many others owe much to the road he paved.

His daughter Sara is a good friend of mine, so I got to meet Carl once or
twice. I can't say I knew him, not at all, but he seemed beloved of his
family and everyone I ever met who knew him. Not bad.

He named his kids after racetracks. Sara is actually Saratoga Ballantine.

I find it odd that there are no other reports on this. Furthermore, if
he indeed has died, it is sad that other reports have not come out by
now. He was well known and appreciated and, agreed, very funny.

He's one of the old-timers I actually enjoyed. There was such
a silliness to him....and a wink in his eye.

He has indeed died.....Mark Evanier is an extremely reliable source.
I, too, find it sad that this hasn't come out elsewhere. such as the
L.A. Times. Maybe the family hasn't completed arrangements yet.

on the way to work this morning he was the subject of conversation on
a local talk radio program though his death had not been reported; the
host and producer were talking about the cast of "mchale's navy",
specifically ballantine's character, gruber.

Don't really doubt it. Just puzzled by the lack of media coverage.
Perhaps it may be by choice by the family as well I guess.

Great clip of him:

I remember his appearance on Night Court playing the Great Falconi, a
washed-up magician who wound up in Harry's courtroom facing charges for
something or other.

Lester Gruber was one of TV's most endurable con men.

I guess he was the same age as Borgnine, who looked great when I met
him at an autograph show last May.

I read in one of his obits about his "surviving" daughter.

Did one of his kids pre-decease him?

I think that's an error. I believe he has one daughter in the entertainment
business and one who isn't, but that they're both alive.

On the other hand, you were searching for the names of horse racing tracks
in the United States. His other daughter is named Molly *Caliente* ...
after Agua Caliente, a pony track in Mexico.

The guy from McHale's Navy? I loved him and didn't even know he was
still alive. Guess that makes Conway and Borgnine a few of the last
ones alive. Ernie has to be approaching 100.

Charlie,
Ernest Borgnine is a very healthy 92. I saw him on KTLA's morning news
about three weeks ago. He was very healthy, and he could talk a blue
streak like ya won't believe.

Don't you think Ernie is the best? You know him in that movie "The
Wild Bunch" to me solidified his star status even though he won an
Oscar for Marty. He also played in a TV show back in the 60's with
Ben Gazzara when he was doing "Run for your life." Time and a Half on
Christmas Eve (1966) I recall it making me cry because as a child I
had a similar life than this kid without his real father. If you ever
get a chance to see it, Ernie deserved an emmy for this in my humble
opinion.

Met Ernie at an autograph show last May.

Still energetic, voice hasn't changed a bit

Got to ask him how it was working with George Reeves in "From Here to
Eternity." Ernie said he was "quiet."

You know I wish someone would write a modern day book about the life
of George Reeves and what really happened to him. He was murdered in
my opinion.

I don't know enough about the entire story to form an opinion. But
anytime something is shrouded in mystery, it gets my attention. I
just can't believe after what little I know or read about him that he
would off himself. If so that's sad.
