WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards
suffered a mild concussion and was hospitalized Saturday, reportedly
after falling out of a tree in New Zealand.
According to media reports, Richards hurt his head after falling out of
a palm tree in Fiji. He was flown to a hospital in Auckland, New
Zealand, after the accident at an exclusive Fiji resort, media reports
said.
A spokeswoman for the band said Richards suffered a mild concussion.
She said he was treated locally, then flown to a hospital for
observation.
Richards is 62.
The Rolling Stones performed in Wellington, New Zealand, on April 18.

I find it hard to believe that so many people have read this post and
failed to pick up on the obvious discrepancy. He didn't fall out of a
tree in New Zealand. He fell out of a tree in Fiji and was so
seriously injured that he had to be flown to New Zealand for emergency
treatment. What I don't find hard to believe is that the Associated
Press apparently don't know the difference between Fiji and New
Zealand.
Excerpt:
"The legendary lead guitarist is understood to have made the
3.5-hour emergency flight to New Zealand after a serious accident at
the Wakaya Island resort. Mr Richards was holidaying on the island
after this month's New Zealand tour.
Resort staff told the Herald on Sunday Mr Richards had been
seriously injured, requiring emergency treatment in New Zealand.
The lead guitarist was admitted to Suva's private hospital on
Friday but required medical attention only available in Auckland."
It may be a more accurate news report, but mentioning that he once had
a heroin habit was a cheap shot:

That's a good point. We were too busy giggling at the idea of a
62-year-old man falling out of a palm tree. However, it doesn't mean
that he was seriously injured. There are two possibilities here:
a) he was seriously injured and needed to be transported right away
b) his injuries are as minor as they imply, but he kicked up a fuss
because he's a Great Big Star so they transported him right away to
shut him up (more common than you'd think). If so, I hope he picks up
the medevac bills
I'm hoping it's b).

I'm going out on a limb here....
Could be the first responder didn't know who he was, rolled him over and saw
a guy with a disfigured face. Then he most likely tried to converse with the
victim and hearing him speak realizes that something just aint right.
Mark
I doubt its B. Several years ago some gigs were postponed because he
fell off a ladder and broke some ribs.

Do you even know what a Darwin candidate is?
How does a 62-year-old man who has fathered five children become the
"perfect Darwin candidate?" No matter what stupid stunt he may die
from ... he will not be a Darwin candidate.

Getting even higher ...
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is having top-secret treatment
in an Auckland private hospital after suffering head injuries in a fall
from a coconut tree in Fiji on Thursday.
The 62-year-old rock star, who was at a luxury resort on the exclusive
Wakaya Island, was airlifted from Suva and taken to Auckland's private
MercyAscot Hospital.
Richards was holidaying with his wife, former model Patti Hansen, after
performing two New Zealand shows with the Rolling Stones, in Auckland
on April 16 and Wellington on April 18.
Despite reports from the United Kingdom that he was critically injured
in the fall, the Sunday Star-Times understands Richards is conscious
and mobile and has not had surgery.
He could be well enough to leave hospital early this week.
MercyAscot Hospital staff refused to confirm whether Richards was a
patient.
But the Sunday Star-Times has learned Richards was assessed by Auckland
neurosurgeon Andrew Law and orthopaedic specialist Alastair Hadlow.
The decision to evacuate Richards came after he had a serious headache
following the fall and then was involved in a jetski accident.
He has been kept in hospital as a precaution but is understood to have
had brain scans.
He has also hired his own security guards.
A visitor to the hospital said Richards was last night sitting up in
bed - wearing a colourful striped beanie - with his wife by his side.
Richards was first treated at a Suva hospital before being evacuated to
New Zealand. He arrived shortly before midnight on Thursday.
Dr Uzzal Kanti Dhar, of Suva Private Hospital, said Richards was
admitted there earlier that day.
"I understand he climbed a coconut tree and fell from the tree and got
injured," he said.
Wakaya Club assistant manager Salesi Finau said he was unable to
confirm or deny Richards had been involved in an accident, but said he
was a guest at the resort last week.
"All I can say is both Keith and his wife, Patti, were here for about a
week. They were here and they had a really good holiday."
The couple had been scheduled to leave the island yesterday, he said.
Staff at the news website Fijilive. com said they understood Richards
was rushed to Suva aboard one of the light aircraft flights which
serviced Wakaya, a 12-minute flight from Nausori airport, near Suva.
An airport source had reported seeing Richards disembark from the
aircraft at Nausori.
Fijian air traffic control said a Medivac flight took place from Suva
to Auckland on Thursday.
Fiji is a particular holiday favourite with the Stones, who wrote a
song called "Fiji Gin" in the late 1970s.
Accommodation rates at the Wakaya Club range from $2000 to $7600 a
night for a minimum of five nights.
The resort, owned by Canadian David Gilmour and his New Zealand-born
wife Jill, has reportedly hosted Pierce Brosnan, Russell Crowe, Nicole
Kidman, Bill Gates, Jim Carrey, Celine Dion and Rupert Murdoch.
BWWAHHHHH HAHAHAHAHA i like that :-)

He certainly picked one of the best private hospitals in NZ. It's more
like a luxury hotel - not that I ever want to stay there again. But it
made being in hospital much less of a chore.
There's quite a lot from that generation who have been unlikely survivors
(Brian Wilson and Pete Townshend to name but two).
The earlier rockers were SO much more sensible.

...I have a friend who books musical acts for the Oktoberfest
celebration in La Crosse. Before coming here, he worked in the same
capacity at one of the Indian tribe-owned casinos in Wisconsin. I think
I'll have him pass that comment along to three of his aquaintances --
Jerry Lee Lewis, Wayne Cochran and Lonnie Mack. I suspect they'll laugh
themselves silly at it ;-) ...

I am surprised that Jerry Lee is the survivor of the Million Dollar Quartet,
and Brian outlived his whole family and Eugene Landy.
