Frank Capra honoree was 64
By DAVE MCNARY

Kim Kurumada, a Directors Guild of America board member who received its
Frank Capra Achievement Award this year, died Thursday of esophageal
cancer in Northridge. He was 64.

Kurumada joined the DGA in 1974 as a second assistant director and
eventually became chair of its western assistant director/unit
production manager council along with serving on a variety of a.d./UPM
committees. He also served 10 years on the DGA's Asian American
Committee, which he helped found, and was elected four times to the DGA
national board, starting in 2003.

Kurumada worked as an a.d. on "All the President's Men," "The China
Syndrome" and "Urban Cowboy" and as a unit production manager on
"Perfect" and "Life Stinks" along with TV movies "Weapons of Mass
Distraction" and "Ghosts of Mars."

He's survived by his wife, Sherry; daughter Kasey; son Chris; and
granddaughters Tanner and Carson. A memorial remembrance will be held at
11 a.m. Dec. 13 at the DGA.
