LOS ANGELES [California] (AP) -- Abby Mann, writer of socially
conscious scripts for movies and television and winner of the 1961
Academy Award for adapted screenplay for "Judgment at Nuremberg," died
Tuesday [March 25, 2008]. He was 80.

Writers Guild of America spokesman Gregg Mitchell confirmed the death.
The cause of death was not given.

Mann also won multiple Emmys, including one in 1973 for "The Marcus-
Nelson Murders," which created a maverick New York police detective
named Theo Kojak. The film, starring Telly Salavas, was spun off into
the long-running TV series "Kojak."

In the original AP obituary, it took six paragraphs for the deceased's
sex to be mentioned. They even avoided it in the first paragraph
(instead of "He was 80", it said, "at the age of 80").

That McMartin thing was one of the scariest -- and best -- things I've
ever seen on TV.

I completely agree.

The prosecutor in that case, BTW, is still a senior prosecutor with
the LA County DA's office. He was in charge of the program to ensure
that exculpatory evidence is turned over to defendants, as required by
law. Guess what law the LA County DA's office routinely ignores?

'She.' She was in charge. Lael Rubin was the prosecutor who
currently conspires to violate defendants' civil rights. While typing
the above, I got to thinking (as I so often do) about how much I hope
Ira Reiner burns in Hell, and that made me type 'he.'
