Janine Collier Charlton, a Chicago, Illinois, artist whose large
abstract paintings were displayed in galleries across the country
during the 1960s and '70s, died of cancer Saturday, November 2, 2002,
in her Mesa, Arizona, home, at the age of 80.

A native of central France, Mrs. Charlton moved to Washington, DC, in
her early 20s as a staff member of the French Embassy. She moved to
New Jersey during the 1950s and while there began to study art and
create abstract paintings using large canvasses and bright colors.
After moving to Chicago in 1960, she displayed her work at several
local art festivals, winning prizes and recognition that earned her a
spot in the Art Institute of Chicago's sales and rental gallery.

In 1961, she made her first sale in Chicago and soon after was showing
works in galleries in New York, Philadelphia and Paris. After a 1968
divorce from her first husband, Donald W. Collier, shefocused on art.
In the mid-1970s, she met Frederick Charlton, who was introduced to
her after remarking to a friend how much he admired her painting. They
married in 1976 and lived in downtown Chicago until 1987, when they
both retired and moved to France for a year.

After traveling through America for several years, the couple settled
in Arizona to be nearer family.
