George John Estock Sr., 86, formerly
of Claymont, DE, passed away at home
on Sunday, November 7, 2010. He was born
in Stirling, NJ to the late John and Anna Estock
and was a 1942 graduate of Harding High
School.

George was a professional baseball player
for 14 years and continued to stay involved
in the sport he loved through umpiring and
coaching. George pitched in the major leagues
in 1951 for the Boston Braves with notable
teammates Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain.
He was a member of the original Wilmington
Blue Rocks in 1944 and 1945 and played for
several other minor league teams throughout
his career. George's 22 wins in 1945 with the
Blue Rocks is still a club record and an
interstate league record. In 1988, he was
inducted into the Delaware Sports
Hall of Fame.

After 28 years of service, George retired from
the DuPont Company as a supervisor at the
Edgemoor location.

Family and friends were extremely important
to George. He enjoyed spending time at the
Jersey shore fishing, crabbing and playing
quoits. He also enjoyed horse racing,
gardening and watching all sports activities.
George enjoyed coaching baseball players from
Little League to High School. He was respected
and looked up to as a mentor.

In addition to his parents, George was
predeceased by his brother, John and his sister,
Ann Price.

He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife
of 62 years, Janet Mae; his sister Catherine
Angermann; daughter Lisa Ruzowicz and her
husband Tony of Garnet Valley, PA; 3 sons,
George and his wife Bernice of Tampa, FL,
David and his wife Lois of Hockessin, DE, and
Jeffrey and his wife June of Wilmington, DE;
9 grandchildren, Sharon Ray, George Ryan,
Kaitlin, Dustin, Tyler, Austin, Jason, Joshua
and Jordan; and 3 great-grandchildren, Nathan,
Olivia and Emily.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm, Thursday,
November 11 at the McCrery Memorial
Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville
(Route 202, just south of Silverside Rd.), with
additional, overflow parking available in the rear
lot of the Brandywine Y.M.C.A. on
Mt. Lebanon Rd. Words of remembrance will
be shared at 9:45 am, Friday, November 12,
followed at 10 am by the Mass of Christian Burial
at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 106 Ridge Rd.,
Chadds Ford, PA.

Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring
the memory of George Estock by sending
a contribution to St. Sebastian Catholic Church,
13075 US Highway 1, Sebastian, FL 32958.
