Wahlberg clan gather to lay their father to rest

Inside Track
The Boston herald

February 20, 2008

Hollywood heavies Mark and Donnie Wahlberg and their sprawling clan
bid a final sad farewell to dad, Donald, yesterday at a funeral Mass
at St. Margaret's Church where the pews were filled with Wahlberg
kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren.

"My dad was always wondering if he did a good job as a parent," "Saw"
star Donnie said during a moving eulogy. "Looking at the front row
here, I think he'd be pretty proud."

Donnie, we're told, gave "a beautiful speech," that moved many in the
packed Dorchester church to tears.

"He said that his dad was known to be a little grouchy," said one of
the mourners. "But that he never hung up the phone or never said
goodbye without saying 'I love you.' That really got to a lot of the
people."

Donnie, his wife, Kim, and their two kids flew in from California for
the services, along with Mark, his S.O. Rhea Durham and their kids.
Donald Wahlberg's eight other living children were also in attendance,
along with his ex-wife, Alma Wahlberg, and most of his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. Jim Wahlberg's two children did the readings
for the service.

Visiting hours at the Murphy Funeral Home on Monday were also packed
with friends and mourners, offering condolences to the large clan.
Word is, three rooms inside the funeral home were filled with flowers,
many from Mark and Donnie's Hollywood friends and associates.

There was also a small scare during the wake when a friend of the
deceased suffered a heart attack inside the funeral home. He was taken
out in an ambulance, but reportedly is OK.

Donald Wahlberg, a former member of Teamsters Local 25 and a Korean
War veteran, passed away last week. He was buried in Cedar Grove
Cemetery in Dorchester.
