WINTERPORT, Maine — A young man who was found burned to death outside a
church on Thursday doused himself with a flammable liquid and then lit a
match in what police have ruled a suicide.
Wilbur “Wes” Strout, 20, of Hancock, started the fire inside the Calvary
Apostolic Church on U.S. Route 1A in Winterport but later jumped out a
second floor window as the building burned, according to police.
Strout’s charred body was discovered by firefighters who responded to
reports of smoke. The church was in flames by that point.
The state medical examiner’s office identified Strout’s body on Friday. His
car was parked in the church’s parking lot and investigators found a journal
and Bible inside.
Investigators say Strout, who was a member of the church, had lived with his
father in North Carolina until moving back to Maine a few months ago.
But thanks for posting.
