Man shoots dog in protest

2:50PM Saturday Aug 29, 2009

A Northland man shot dead his dog after a row with Whangarei District
Council over registering the animal.

Alan Agnew has tried three times to register his dog Coz with the
council since July.

But he refused to supply his date of birth as required by the council,
considering it a breach of privacy, The Northern Advocate reported.

"The council are just being nosy and are trying to find something to
bully me over," he said.

Mr Agnew, from Kamo, then decided to have the dog put down rather than
give in to the council.

But when a vet had told him that would cost $111, he shot the dog
himself.

Mr Agnew then put the Coz into a dog biscuit bag and took it to the
council to "make it into a bigger issue".

Whangarei SPCA manager Francine Shields said it was sad someone should
feel desperate enough to take such a measure.

Dog shot dead in rego row

Andr Hueber | 28th August 2009

A Kamo cattle farmer has shot his dog and delivered it to the
Whangarei District Council in protest over problems registering it.

Alan Agnew has been at loggerheads with the council after refusing to
provide his personal details for registering his dog Coz.

He had tried to register the dog three times since July but refused
to give his date of birth because he considered it a breach of
privacy. "People want to know my age because I'm short. The council

are just being nosy and are trying to find something to bully me
over," he said.

"If they looked on the back of the cheque, all details except my date
of birth were there."

A council worker had told Mr Agnew the council would legally obtain a
copy of his birth certificate, which he took as a threat. "They've
taken away my pride of paying my bill on time - that's the part that
hurt."

He had decided to put the dog down rather than meet the council's
requirements - but a vet had told him that would cost $111.

"I told them a bullet would be cheaper, and their faces dropped."

Yesterday after shooting Coz in the head at his Kamo farm, Mr Agnew
put the dog into a dog biscuit bag and took it to the council to

"make it into a bigger issue".

Group manager environment Paul Dell said he had met Mr Agnew and the
issue had been resolved. "My approach has been to ask Alan to work
with us around the issue. We understand his concerns, but the
legislation requiring his date of birth is set by central government
and we have to abide by that."

Some of Mr Agnew's personal details were on the back of the cheque but
the council needed more specific details: "He has a concern about his
personal information being made public, but I reiterated to him that
it's collected for a specific reason and only used for that purpose."

Whangarei SPCA manager Francine Shields said it was sad someone
should feel desperate enough to take such a measure.

Are you God, or only trying to act like one?
If only trying to act like one, please stop.
It's none of your business, period!
THIS is the cause of our present problems in America with the

running your own.
I'm sure you have more than enough problems in running your own life

We can tell you're old, Mr Tiny, just by looking at you.

Where *I* live, if you are over a certain age, you pay $10
registration for the lifetime of the dog.....rather than $10 per
year. I'm happy to show them my driver's license.

Open carry. Concealed carry permits. Gun racks.

Little kids shooting each other.

In Northern Utah, we have at least one kid go down a year to gun
accidents. When I was in high school, one of my friends accidentally
shot his best friend with a shot gun he thought was unloaded. Kid
died.

In South Ogden, we had a boy blow off the top of his own head while on
his way to the local armory to collect his gun safety course
certificate. He stumbled while carrying his loaded rifle.

A few years back, we had a boy accidentally discharge a rifle in his
bedroom. A toddler on the sidewalk below died. The accidental
shooter then turned the gun on himself in horror at what he'd done.

There are numerous stories like those above.

According to the Utah State Department of Health, we lose 1-2 kids a
year to unintentional shootings.

From the Deseret News: "The Utah Department of Health's Violence and
Injury Prevention Program says that on average, 220 Utahns die, 100
are hospitalized and 180 are treated in emergency departments for
firearm injuries each year. The numbers were based on VIPP statistics
from 2001 to 2005."

Gun ownership in Utah is estimated to run around 60-70% of
households. We tend to be very lax with safe gun storage. It amazes
me we don't have more accidents.

My step-brother shot his best friend in the upper leg while climbing
over a fence with a loaded rifle when they were in their teens. The
friend almost bled to death ...

Yup.

Bob F -- Kris and I (also Kris) are practically neighbors. Literally.

Don't forget the 3-year-old who found the loaded gun mommy had
"safely" put on top of the dresser for "protection". Luckily, when
the little girl fired it, only the safety (or some part) hit her.

Last year, a boy (Utah County) put a gun to the head of a
neighborhood girl at a party, and fired. Killed her instantly.
Turns out he'd stolen two guns from his grandfather a year
before....and gramps thought he had good security.

If they're not letting the kids get the guns, they're backing
over the kids at church or in driveways.

You know what? I had a whole rant about this composed in my head, but
only because I forgot my rule about discussing gun politics and
culture in newsgroups without the word "politics" in the name. Please
forget I brought it up.

Farmer stands by shooting his dog

4:00AM Sunday Aug 30, 2009

A farmer who shot a dog in protest at being asked for his date of
birth is standing behind the decision despite mounting criticism from
animal welfare groups.

Alan Agnew shot his dog, Coz, after the Whangarei District Council
refused to register the dog, because Agnew would not supply his date
of birth.

Agnew, a small person, had considered the birth-date request a breach
of privacy. He acknowledged he was sensitive about his date of birth:
"I get asked by all sorts of people how old I am and I tell them it's
none of their business. They're mainly interested because of my size."

However, his actions have outraged animal welfare groups. RNZ SPCA
boss Robyn Kippenberger said that, legally, Agnew was allowed to shoot
his dog but it was a "very extreme action".

"This dog has been forfeited for what someone feels are their civil
liberties. The dog has paid for his hypersensitivity."

"The irony is that of all things, his dog would never have
discriminated against him for size or anything else."

"The hate-filled, irrational rants by some people in this ng against those
anti-inanimate objects (guns), are self-defeating and a real threat to your
own lives and those of those you love and care about.

Don't you idiots realize every government wants to disarm its citizens so
they can slaughter everybody they feel like with nothing to fear?

It's happened over-and-over again in history, yet you dumbasses keep up your
irrational hatred of guns and forget the GOVERNMENT has the LARGEST, MOST
POWERFUL GUNS OF ALL.

How stupid and forgetful can you get?

READ history and remember what Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse-Tung, Pol Pot, Idi
Amin, and all the other dictators did when they first became dictator: they
banned ordinary citizens from owning weapons for self-defense so the
military and police had a monopoly of force and could freely use them
anytime they wanted against their own citizens!

Why are you so BLIND to the truth and listen only to your main enemy: Your
Government and its mass media lackeys who repeat the lies and half-truths,
and omit mentioning when privately-owned guns STOPPED a massacre! It's
happened many times, such as at a Pearl, Mississippi high school when a vice
principal ran to his car and got *his* gun and pointed it at the boy who was
killing others, and got him to drop his gun or the boy would have also died
along with his victims. Did the mass media ever report how *that* episode
ended peacefully?

Heck, no! The media covered it up (of course!) and ignored the part *after*
the boy killed a couple of classmates--and would have continued to kill MORE
PEOPLE but the private handgun owner, the vice-principal stopped the killing
in showing HIS privately-owned gun and pointed it at the shooter. The
police were a long time away from getting there, and as usually is the case,
they get there WAY AFTER the damage is done--exactly as they did at Virginia
Tech and other massacres where "guns aren't allowed."

Duh, I guess the shooter(s) either can't read (a distinct possibility these
days, in the dumbed-down government-run schools), or they just ignore the
signs and pull out their guns (with nobody armed close enough to stop them
for a long time) and start another killing field, leading to more hysterical
calls by ignoramuses and the lackey mass media, for MORE gun control laws
that never stopped somebody from killing someone else.

Forget that history lesson at your own (and your children's and
grandchildren's) peril!"
