Nasik (Agencies) - Former international cricketer
Hemchandra Tukaram alias Bal Dani died in sleep here
early today after a prolonged illness, according to
family sources.
He was 66 and is survived by wife, a son and a daughter.
A former national selector, Dani, a medium pace bowler,
donned the Indian colours when he made his test debut
against Pakistan at the age of 19 at Mumbai's Brabourne
stadium.
Dani, who served in the Air Force as Air Commodore,
however, was not picked for other international matches
as spinners dominated the scene then.
But the airman, who captained services and north zone,
made his mark in the domestic cricket by notching 15
Ranji Trophy centuries and taking more than 400 wickets
for services, which is a record.
Dani served as national selector from 1968-1975. He was
also the manager, selector and coach of Maharashtra
Ranjhi Side from 1989 to 1997.
Commissioned in the Air Force in 1956, Dani rose to the
rank of Air Commodore and retired in 1987. He was
commanding officer at Air Force station Devlali near here
from 1981-1983.
He was actively involved in social work and was
associated with 'Sneha Seva' a social organisation in
Pune.
