Solar landscape lighting?

along walkways? We'd prefer to not rip up gardens and lawn
to install some lighting around our deck and walks. I've
seen the solar lights at Home Depot and am considering
installing those. Anyone have any experience with these?

FWIW....We have the solar "laterns" that you just stick in the ground. They
came 4 to a set at Sam's Club. We liked the way the fixtures look and
mostly just wanted them to mark the end of our driveway (it's hidden among a
stand of large pine trees) for our guests. It does the job for that, but
they don't really put off enough light to light the driveway or walkway.
They just kind of glow.

Yes we had them at our house in Jamaica. They are good in that the
"installation" is pretty simple (not to mention you can easily change
your mind about where you want them). They don't really illuminate
anything though, really just accent lighting (of course, you probably
realize that). Also, ours pretty much died around midnight or so and
they were positioned on the south side of the house and got full
tropical sun almost all day. (Earlier on a cloudy day). If we were
going to do that sort of thing again we'd probably go with the solar
again, though. They are considerably more expensive, though. (Or
they were then anyway. We probably bought them ~4-5 years ago though
so they might be less expensive now).

Ditto that. We had a pair of solar lights by the front door to our
apartment. They were inexpensive, which might have been the problem
(probably $5-10 apiece, and I know I've seen much more expensive ones
at Lowes and Home Depot). They did glow nicely, but didn't exactly
shed light, if that makes any sense. In other words, from the street,
you could see them glowing, but if you stood right next to one, it
wouldn't illuminate your feet much at all. Plus on cloudy days during
the winter, the light would only last an hour or two past dusk. Some
more expensive ones might work better though :)

Thanks for the info - I think we'll end up trying the ones I
saw at Home Depot (just over $10/each) and then see where we
need to fill in with brighter lights.

Ok, I wondered how long they lasted, so that's good to know.
I'm not so worried about the price - Home Depot has a set of
8 lights for $89. It seems that if I want to try them out,
that's the way to go.

ILs have some of this and it works pretty well, even in Scotland.
They don't get all night illumination in winter out of it though, so
you probably won't unless you are in the south! Its not really
suitable as the only outside illumination, though its great for mood
lighting
