I sent a nasty-gram to the manager of our new WalMart last year about
their portrait studio, because they had one person assigned per day
(ie, the studio was open from 9am - 6pm and the one person that worked
that shift did pictures, answered the phone, answered questions from
customers, handed out pictures, took orders, etc). It was
disorganized, the saleswoman was rude (I would have been, too, if it
were my job). They seem to think it's a real easy job to keep
kids/babies clean and quiet for hours while they futz around with one
person doing a two-person job.
Now, we use Picture People or just take our own - as Jen gets older,
the candids look better, are cheaper and easier to get.

Ours is awful too, and I've left without getting her picture taken
twice. I've had the best luck with going in the morning during the week
when their day is just starting and there's less likely to be a back-log.
We do most of ours at the Picture People now (great store!), but for
lots of pictures they're very expensive, so we use the Sears package
coupon for when we want a bunch (i.e. Christmas cards).

At least I know its not just here :) That is a good idea. Unfortunately
that is usually when I'm at work (like I should be now) and then when we
leave work Maddie needs a nap...

I've gotten several RL recommendations for there and now two for two online.
I'll have to give them a shot. My complaint with going there is I have to
drive 1/2 hour to get there.

Exactly! What do they think you are going to do with a baby or little kid
to keep them happy for that hour? I also waited around once only to have an
upset baby when we got in there and we left after a few shots just didn't
yield any results.

I'm going to try Picture People.

Well, I have to drive 1/2 hour to get anywhere so it doesn't matter
here. :-)
Jess also likes the Picture People, so make that three on-line recs. If
you go to http://picturepeople.com/html/home_whatsnew.html you can print
a coupon for a free sitting and free 8x10. They have new coupons frequently.

We've been all over for pictures in Her Majesty's life. We started out
at Sears, and, while we've never had the major problems that other folks
had, DH didn't like the quality so well.
(Although, when HM was a wee one, maybe 6 months old, I had one woman, a
fellow customer at Sears, peer at HM and say to me accusingly, "Did
you put eye shadow on that baby?" "No, ma'am, those are the veins in
her eyelids.")
We've been to K-Mart and JC Penney and once, even, Wal*Mart. The
one-hour place at the mall also has gotten our business (Portrait
People? They're owned by Hallmark now). Usually, when I remember to
make the appointments in enough time, we go to Penney's.
I've been pretty lucky with the technicians, I guess. They've been
almost uniformly pleasant and professional. My only problem is that I
end up getting suckered into buying the extra prints, which means the
wallet takes a big hit. But, overall, we've been pleased.

We went to Picture People today. I spent waaay too much money, but was very
happy with the service and the photos. In fact, I think I'm going to join
their 'club' for unlimited sittings for a year and a few other perks. On the
website, you can sign up for the new mom's club and the birthday club.

What they do is take a few (8? 10?) shots during the sitting and then
they develop the 5 best poses -- one 8x10 and two sheets of 1 5x7 and 4
wallets each and also a single 10x13 print in an hour. Then you pick
what you want to buy and they send the rest back to their headquarters.
If you want more than they develop (say, 2 8x10 of the same pose) then
they run those off and it takes about another hour.
We usually get a free 8x10 from the coupon they're offering and maybe an
extra sheet (you get 3 free in the year if you join their club). I've
been very pleased, as you can probably tell. Last time I did use the
coupon for their Valentine's Day cards and wallets, though.

We were just there today, and the photographer took about 8 shots. One of the
sheets of 5x7s was misprinted and she printed that up for me again and an extra
sheet in about 10 minutes.

Thanks,

It is $15 per sheet (1 - 8x10 or 2 - 5x7s or 8 wallets) or $40 for 3 sheets of
the same pose, $35 for the second set of 3 of the same pose. It is very
pricey, but when I showed DH the pictures last night, he said I could have
spent twice as much. I had a coupon for a free 8x10 and a free sheet of
wallets (with purchase of V-day cards that you insert the wallet into). On top
of that, I bought 2 "packages" ( 1 at $40 and 1 at $35) and 5 single sheets.

Grrr... Here they won't do a sheet of 2 5x7s or 8 wallets. A sheet is
either an 8x10 or one 5x7 and 4 wallets. Sigh.
-Stephanie, who doesn't usually have much use for wallet-sized pictures.
