Russian general threatens nuclear strike on Poland as Bush demands
Moscow withdraw from Georgia
"Gen Nogovitsyn said: '[Poland] becomes a target for attack. Such
targets are destroyed as a first priority.' "
America and Russia were on the brink of a renewed Cold War last night
after Russian generals raised the spectre of a nuclear strike on a key
Western ally.
General Anatoly Nogovitsyn - Deputy Chief of the Russian Defence
Staff and a key strategist of Russia's intervention in Georgia -
declared that Poland was 'exposing itself to a strike - 100 per cent'.
It was the first time in recent days that Russia had hinted at military
action against a Western ally. Poland is a member of Nato as well as the
EU.
Gen Nogovitsyn said: '[Poland] becomes a target for attack. Such targets
are destroyed as a first priority.'
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev echoed his words, claiming the Polish
deal 'clearly demonstrated' that the missile shield 'has the Russian
Federation as its target.'
He branded Poland's decision 'sad news for all who live on this densely
populated continent.'
