Almost, but not quite. I moved over to area.com in order to keep shell
service. And when I spoke with them I asked specifically if they planned
to keep it. The answer was yes.
But, as for the era of Unix do-it-yourselfers, yes, that era is fading
fast.

Shell accounts are still available, you know. I'm answering this from one

I dumped Netcom about the same time. Netcom got wayyyyyyy too much attidude for
me. Though I did go get another shell account. No way I was going to let all

Apparently, several people signed up with his service. He appears in

That 'guy' is me. Even though I had a few Netcom/MindSpring/Earthlink

Ugh. I wasn't paying attention. Eric Lubjek is an 'alias'

but I kept the shell account.
But the alias is like this:

B r u c e J i l e k

Actually, I think it's quite the opposite. The fall of the ISP shell
account has been met by the rise of the personal shell account --
running your own UNIXly server/workstation. With the proliferation of
the many linuces, the open/free/netBSD's, (and a nod to Sun's 'free'
distribution of Solaris), anybody can be a unix do-it-yourselfer, and
be root, to boot (pun intended). As broadband access to the net
continues to spread, the advantages found in having a shell account at
the ISP become trivial.
I'd say the era of the unix do-it-yourselfer is thriving.
(former netcom shell, former crl shell. current well.com shell, and -
obviously if you grok my sig - shells all over hell-and-gone at
home and work around the country).

Quite the contrary, IMO. As security issues continue to proliferate,
among other reasons, shell-inclined people like me will be more and more
interested in paying someone else to do the sysadmin work. It's much
more cost-effective to telnet to a professionally-administered remote
shell than to pay someone to remotely administer a local shell.

Not trivial to me. The advantages of ISP shell for me are that both my
mail and my news are centralized so that wherever in the workd I log on I
can see exactly the same thing; nothing to carry around, nothing to synch.
Now, if Yahoo offered news as well as mail -- and offered news in as nifty
a way as Tin does, I'd be tempted to want to ditch my ISP's shell, since
there are lots of Windows Unix clients that work better than their Unix
shell counterparts.
And I'm not about to use the mess that Deja.com has become. I find them
impossible to navigate and they don't have all the newsgroups I want.

Well, what *I* did was set up an ssh account on my machine, and I read news
on a "trn" from a shell I have here. This way, no matter where I am, I
still read my news in the same place.
This is the real advantage of a home shell account.

My God, I didn't realize it COULD go any further downhill.
I'm still using a shell account from here (best.com). I had a netcom
shell account back in 1994, but I switched to best about a year after
because they started paying less attention to shell customers and more
to ixers.

I did not realize best still ofered shell accounts. Are they atking new
subscribers?
I don't think they are offering new accounts, at least they shouldn't
be. Verio is in a perpetually delayed process of shutting down
the Best shell machines.
The Best mailing list machine just died and will not be repaired.
The news server is doing well (after dying), but indicators are
that it won't be maintained if it has problems.
But, yeah, the shell accounts are still there. I have two of them,
at least until I find the time to move the web sites.

I very much doubt it.
Would recommend against it, anyway.
Despite the headers you may see here and there, best does not exist.
It was borged quite some time ago, and the final remnants are
probably getting swept under various Verio carpets as I type.
I just use it in news headers because it's still deliverable
and I have it heavily filtered.
Bob O`Bob
> (I almost never venture out of ba.internet these days because most

Like ba.internet isn't?
I only know what I read in Best/Verio/NTT's internal newsgroups.
My understanding is that the current shell accounts will be migrated to a
virtual server configuration, a` la iServer.com. So there will still
be shell access. It is yet unclear what, if any, restrictions will be
present on the shell access.
>The Best mailing list machine just died and will not be repaired.
Lastest news is that BestServ is coming back.
>The news server is doing well (after dying), but indicators are

I though it was to be maintained at _least_ for the internal best.*
groups, but users would eventually need to use one of several Verio
servers for external groups.
>But, yeah, the shell accounts are still there. I have two of them,

Yeah, only two things keeping me there now, inertia and curiosity
as to how well the new virtual server accounts will perform.

I'm afraid that intertia is the only one of those that applies to me.
I've seen the writing on the wall. Best/Verio will fall over hard as
far as I'm concerned far sooner than I'd like.
But the biggest thing keeping me from just moving - so far - is where I
live. No high-speed, always on, static IP access in my area short of an
