As a special "Happy Hallowe'en to Me", I seem to have made literary history:

http://tinyurl.com/6yhp2a
October 23, 2008
CreateSpace Author Accused of Plagiarism

And so it begins. John Fitzgerald, "author" of Necronomicon Everything
You Never Wanted To Know, has been openly and vehemently accused of
plagiarism by Dan Clore, who posts in his review of the book: "The
majority of this book has been copied directly from my website, The Dan
Clore Necronomicon Page: Everything You Never Wanted To Know About The
Necronomicon (Al Azif) Of The Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred But Weren't Afraid
Enough To Know Better Than To Ask!"

On Clore's site, the opening line reads, "The publication of hoax
editions of the Necronomicon -- a fictional work used as a prop in the
weird fiction of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and other writers -- may seem
a simple matter. On closer examination this may no longer appear to be
the case."

And, in what I'm *sure* is coincidence, the "Look Inside" option of
Fitzgerald's CreateSpace sends me directly to a page that reads, "The
publication of hoax editions of the Necronomicon -- a fictional work
used as a prop in the weird fiction of Howard Phillips Lovecraft and
other writers -- may seem a simple matter. On closer examination this
may no longer appear to be the case."

They are pretty much the same throughout, from what I am able to read on
the Look Inside option.

He made the post on Oct. 6, 2008, but Amazon/CreateSpace/Booksurge has
not seen fit to remove the book and it appears to still be in
production. I assume they're investigating, but it is not uncommon that
book sales be frozen, to reduce liability of the parties, if any should
be found.

Print-for-free is doing a lot to harm self-publishing in general. The
lack of editing, quality control and high prices have taken the industry
to new depths, ensuring whatever gains they've made in the last decade
are lost. Now it would appear that the fundamentals of copyright might
be in jeopardy, in my opinion.

Did you ever *actually* contact Amazon, Dan?!

If so, you should have a case number they sent you in their
emails to you. And if you have that, send them the *full* link
and a copy of this review ASAP.

If you haven't, just go to Amazon's "Contact Us" or "Feedback"
pages and send this *now*. The links for those pages appear just
about on every page at Amazon.

As I said, Bad Press is the last thing Amazon wants, *especially*
with its Print-and-Pay sales.

You can't ask for a better response than that.

Surely Dan was hoping for the guy to vanish some dark night to the
accompaniment of a soul-rending scream and a chorus of infernal groans
ascending into the blackness of the empyrean, and for nothing to be
left of his house but a pool of cold, glowing liquid covered with a
drifting mist that smelt of sulphur and graves.

Not really. The issue here (so far as I'm concerned) was one of fraud
(plagiarism, presenting my work as his own) more than one of
intellectual property. I mean, the guy just did a copy-and-paste of
stuff from my website and deleted "by Dan Clore"* from it, publishing it
under his own name.

*Except in the one case where he forgot to do so.
