The mushroom blog linked to below has some of the recent eats I've been finding over the last couple weeks. Fallen leaves are getting very thick here in the east. Makes finding things difficult.

Two questions: I recall seeing in this group I believe, that someone was storing and using giant puffball spore as a seasoning. Anyone else do this or heard of it? In all the sources I've found the whiteness of the glea is stressed for edibility. It's almost like an old mushroomers tale with no reasoning behind the admonition. unable to id this probable russula

We have lots of brevipes around here but this is quite different. I also found albonigra but it doesn't really fit either. It is red with some scale on the top. Has the typical lactarius/ russula thick short stipe. Meat is white, gills cream, brown velvet at top of stipe where it meets gills. 8-9" across. smells a little on... more »

I have posted a pics of two varieties of mushrooms growing in my yard. They can be seen at: [link] T35 allows pics under 1 mb so they aren't very large pics. Any help would be appreciated. I'll be mowing them today but if I find out they are edible I'll get some when they return... more »

ID Request, What Hygrocybe is This?

Things are very dry in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. Despite the dryness, I found Gymnopilus, Armillaria, Lycoperdon, and a Hygrocybe growing next to a spring. The first 3 are able to obtain moisture from dead tree trunks wicking moisture from a deeper ground strata, or from moisture still bound up in fallen trees. The Hygrocybe was growing next... more »
