Wild propagation of Agaricus subrufescens
|
| |
I find Agaricus subrufescens reliably but sparingly growing in my back yard. The almond aroma of this mushroom is heavenly, reminding me of almond-flavored biscotti. There are a few popping up now in the grass thatch.
I took a whole, mature mushroom, put it in a large measuring cup with a... more »

Recent finds, late May
|

Starting to find a variety of things. The only choice find was Black Trumpets, Craterellus fallax, found in the usual spot year after year in my yard. The wife prepared these with butter and onion, and cooked them in an egg and cheese omelet, with a dab of salsa. Quite possibly the best omelet I ever tasted. See:... more »

Hope to get out today
|

Had a cold that wouldn't go away. But, the congestion is starting to loosen, finally. Had a couple inches of rain over the last few days, and woke up to heavy fog this morning. Will ignore my better judgement telling me to stay inside and nurse my cold, and instead go out for a trial foray... Looks like a tropical forest out there. Very promising.... more »

Dry and dusty...
|
| |
Went into the nearest part of the National Forest today (Sunday) to check things out. Much vehicle traffic racing back and forth on the forest gravel road raising holy hell amounts of dust. Found out the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club is running their Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run. See: [link] .... more »

8th April, three fine specimens of (almost certainly) Agaricus bitorquis. The weather this year is confusing them, I think - just as last year's did.
Last year - less rain than the Sahara. This year, summer temperatures in early March...

ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER THREAT TODAY
|
| |
This has been the kind of weather we've had for the last couple weeks; no precipitation, low humidity, low fuel moisture, strong breezes and wind gusts... RED FLAG warnings have been posted for several days. The air around our home is hazy, with the acrid smell of smoke.
Several forest fires have broken out in our immediate region, most are... more »

Today's breakfast 4/6/12
|
| |
Hickory smoked morels and Portuguese toasted bread. Morels were marinated overnight in olive oil, fresh basil, minced garlic and kosher salt. Fresh, dried, shaved hickory was used for smoke. Olive oil was dribbled over toast. Breakfast was vegetarian, a bonus since today is Good Friday (no meat). Mushrooms attained a very surprising and... more »

Today's breakfast 4/5/12
|
| |
Smoked crimini mushrooms and salted herring melted into Swiss cheese on Portuguese bread. Store-bought crimini mushrooms were smoked using wild grapevine. But, I kinda overdid it, to the point of over smoking. They're strong, so best tempered with some bread and cheese. Needless to say, this breakfast is not for the faint or weak hearted. Typical early spring finds
|
| |
Went out yesterday looking for morels and found a few. Also found Gyromitra, and what I think is Pluteus cervinus.
These are some of the Morchella I found on 4/4/12. Hope to continue to forage, but hoping for some rain. It's been pretty dry. See.
