I don't have much experience culturing mushrooms. Living in the National
Forest, I can usually find quantities of wild mushrooms. The Pleurotus I
find in the wild are almost always on Tulip Poplar trees, usually
standing, but having died recently. I also have found them growing from
wounds on living trees.

This past spring I grew some blue oysters from a kit obtained at Fungi
Perfecti. It put out a good crop, after which I tried transplanting
it. Half went into a bale of straw which I put out by the vineyard and
watered regularly. The rest was divided up among four stumps and old

I dry many mushrooms and powder them afterwards in a liquidiser. With
puffballs, you have to slice them very thinly or the spores will begin
to ripen.
Excellent when dded to stews, casseroles etc.

I've found Grifola growing at the base of oak trees that appeared

I found some oysters yesterday in my wood pile. They were growing on a large
block of willow that came down in a storm this spring. The old willow is
covered in burls and I have often seen oysters fruiting from them. Perhaps
burls are caused by fungi? I have observed burls when collecting many times

I saw some nice Oyster Mushrooms growing high on a tree behind a
guardrail used to keep cars from careening off a steep cliff. The
mushrooms were all but inaccessible, but they inspired me to look
elsewhere. I did find a few nice ones, and will continue to forage for
