A northern Utah woman told an undercover informant that she had sold
more than 300 birth certificates to create identities, according to
charges unsealed Thursday in federal court.
Veronica Carrillo was arrested at a Logan apartment Tuesday, the same
day that more than 100 people were arrested in an illegal-immigration
investigation at a Swift & Co. meatpacking plant in Hyrum, 10 miles
south of Logan.
"She does not work at Swift," said Melodie Rydalch, a spokeswoman for
the U.S. attorney's office in Salt Lake City. "However, we believe she
may have provided documents to some of the employees working there."
Carrillo, 41, a Mexican national, was charged with identity theft and
the sale of citizenship papers. She was ordered to jail to await
trial.
An arraignment was set for Dec. 21.
Carrillo's lawyer, Michael Jaenish, did not immediately return an
Associated Press call seeking comment left after regular business
hours.
Eleuterio Gutierrez of El Paso, Texas, was also charged but has not
been found, Rydalch said.
Authorities began investigating Carrillo on Nov. 1 after a tipster
said
she was selling birth certificates and Social Security numbers,
immigration agent Greg McClune said in an affidavit.
An informant wired with video and audio devices met with Carrillo a
week later and agreed to pay $1,400 for two birth certificates and
Social Security cards, McClune said.
The documents were shipped from Texas and intercepted Nov. 14 by
postal
inspectors, who made copies and sent the envelope to Carrillo in
Logan,
McClune said.
Inspectors subsequently intercepted more envelopes from Texas.
"Carrillo told the (informant) that she has sold over 300 U.S. birth
certificates in the past," McClune said in his affidavit.
Meanwhile, in Cache County, some of the 58 people charged with forgery
and identity theft appeared Thursday in 1st District Court. They were
among the 100 people arrested at the Swift plant, part of a federal
sweep at meatpacking factories in six states.

BTW, you seem to be under the mistaken impression that I am fabulously
wealthy or something like that? This is yet another false rumor

Nothing could be further from the truth as I am so not interested in
wealth it is funny. I make/take only what I need to do what I need to
do, and that is it. Just because I might be involved with a big ticket

Americans would) by US standards, I am quite middle class...in fact,

So going off on a tangent explaining how middle class you are or
implying this is about money is pointless. As for not caring for
material things, it would be sort of hard to do what you do without
all your high-tech equipment, wouldn't it? I suppose if I wanted to
accrue six computers and pay for access to professional-level sites to
support a "hobby" I could do so...though I'd certainly have to
sacrifice some other things. Most other things, come to think of it.

Considering your declared purpose is the Total Annihilation of every
unenrolled Indian, that places quite an ethical dilemma on any Tribal
Officer who knowingly receives a call from you about a name they do
*not* recognize: if they say "no", are they pulling a trigger?

That really does bring up a lot of issues regarding privacy rights,
and even possible endangerment. Hypothetical scenario: What if an
enrolled Indian - for his or her own personal reasons - doesn't *want*
it to be known to any 'tom, dick or harry' that he is enrolled, or a
member of a particular Tribe? How much personal information does a
person have a right to claim as his 'own'?
I don't know if it is Tribal law that determines this or if it is
State or Federal law.
On the other hand, why would any Tribe have a Tribal or even 'moral'
obligation to the rights of a person who is not enrolled? They are
only giving out negative rather than affirmative information. And
certainly they would have no sympathy for someone who may be falsely
'marketing' themselves and/or their services as Indian - and thereby
taking food from *their* children's plates.
However... *intention* for making the inquiry about enrollment *does*
matter if for no other reason than the issue of 'faux indians' being a
very serious one. Emotions can run high, even among non-native people
(as with Pure White Betsy). So even when there is no Tribal obligation
to a person who is not enrolled, if there is a potential to endanger
someone by giving out the information whether 'yes' or 'no', or if
it's legally a violation of privacy rights under federal law, then it
seems there is a obligation on the part of the Tribe as well. Whatever
the case is (and i surely don't know), the issue looks very
complicated. Laws should be more specific on this issue so that all
parties (native and non-native) know and understand.
I do not know the answer - these are only thoughts i'm having.
