Not a bad Epitaph.
"Remembered for his words and wit."
I could live with that.
Oh, wait! That rather defeats the purpose.... ;-)
The names on that list were people who contributed a lot to this ng.
Many good people have posted here through the years, both indian and
'not'. Some have crossed over and some remain - but they were all part
of the history of alt.native. Their words will be remembered - as will
the days when posters were exchanging seeds via snail mail, and poetry
wars 'raged on'. I think maybe it's hard for people who were not
regularly reading and posting in the 'early days' of alt.native to
understand the sentimental feelings that some of us have 'now'... but
i think it was a good thing LL did by posting this thread.
"Lest we forget."

Aloha Donna, I wish these day's I could type like I used too. Just to
convey how comforting your words are here today.
Much Aloha's!

even da ole Flint know where NOT to go...
There were very good white people like Jason. He didn't try to control
what Indians said. He may have disagreed but he didn't try to control.
I have read alt.native for a long time and wasn't interested. I was on
here during Makah whaling before this list was moved to google. My
only interest is Anna Mae and Treaty rights. Just out of curiosity
Donna, why does a white woman want to post on an Indian discussion
site? Just curious, not looking for a fight. I miss Jason's
intelligence and humor. He was fun to talk with. He was a friend
without being invasive. Not many white people can do that.
i pologize fer monicaz inability to git it sorted out...
k now monica...ya member wha to say?
I just figured (for the past nine years) 'why not?'
And then... of course... since i am a one-ng woman and do not post
much elsewhere... i figure that i do not want to alienate myself here
from anyone's affections by giving the silent treatment or walking a
wide circle around everyone. That would be self-defeating. Otherwise i
would say that i post here because it is now very familiar and i am
(or would like to be) a creature of habit. But mostly i chalk it up to
chemistry and the laws of attraction.
Plus... sometimes i like to make y'all laugh.
It gives me pleasure.
Is THAT so wrong?
At least... that is why *one* white woman likes to post on an indian
discussion site.
Wish i could come up with a more fascinating motivation, but that's
all i got.
I am of The Anishinabe People.....All who live and breath are of some
*People* somewhere.
This News Group...can Kiss My Red Ass good-by....if I thought for one

So very well said Wayne George! My kids used to talk about this site
and how it was a place they would be proud to wear the "t shirt". I am
baby sitting my almost two yr old grandson while my daughter and her
husband are off Island to have his sister any day now. I look at my
grandkids and wonder now what will be the threads that connect their
lives to the cultures that run through their viens. I hold great hope
one day Alt Native will be "t shirt" worthy again. I know those who
have passed still breath their wisdom here and alway's will.
Much Aloha WG truly.

Thanks donna, just wondering.
Gee WGl, are you as defensive about Indians as you are about white
women? I thought this was a site to discuss Indian issues. And white
women do not have a right to silence us.

As is common with so many peoples,...
Abenaki called themselves Alnanbal meaning "men."
Bayougoula name for themselves was "Ischenoca" which translates approximately as "our
people."
Catawba used for themselves the name Iyeye (people) or Nieye(real people).
In their own language, Comanches referred to themselves as the Nemene 'our people.'
The Delaware called themselves Lenape translated either as "original people" or "true
men."
Illinois is the French version of their own name Illiniwek meaning "men" or "people".
Lakota means "Strong Friend," or "Ally".
Mi'mkaq comes from a word from their own language meaning "allies."
Montagnais and Naskapi today refer to themselves as the Innu, or "people." or Neenoilno
(perfect people)
The Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi call themselves Anishinabe (Anishinaubag, Neshnabek)
meaning "original men", "people"
In their own language the Cherokee originally called themselves the Aniyunwiya (or
Anniyaya) "principal people"
I am a human being.
I am a 'real people'.
I am a friend and ally.
Therefore...
I am Alnanbal.
I am Anishinabe.
I am Aniyunwiya.
I am Illiniwek.
I am Innu.
I am Ischenoca.
I am Iyeye.
I am Lakota.
I am Lenape.
I am Mi'mkaq.
I try to be Neenoilno.
I am Nemene.
I am Nieye.
I am human.

Said American [Indian] Chieftain Acuera in reply to
the invader de Soto's demand for submission to
the king and the church so as to 'enjoy the benefits
of 'civilization' and service:
"I have long since learned who you [European Christians] are,
through others of you who came years ago to my land;
and I already know very well what your customs and
behavior are like. To me you are professional
vagabonds who wander from place to place,
gaining your livelihood by robbing, sacking and
murdering people who have given you no offense.

to die a hundred deaths to maintain the freedom
of our land. This is our answer, both
for the present and forevermore."

I was talking about Lisa. You remind me of a lot of Indian men that
won't take a stand on anything but white women. That's your response
to racism.
Klallam means strong people. A Skokomish chief was bulding a new
house. He invited all the Tribes to help. He wanted to build the
biggest long house ever. He was using big trees, like a log house.
None of the Tribes could lift the logs. When it came to our turn, we
rolled the logs into the water, then got under them and packed them
out of the water and put them in place. The other Tribes called us the
"Strong People."

read your words monica! you obviosly don't know many Indian men. And
as for racism? your words wreek of racism!
You are white, Lisa.
No thanks WG. "Canada" is just across the water. When I go it is to
visit relatives or for dances. The issue of racism and white women has
never been addressed by any Indian group. I doubt that it will. But be
assured it is discussed by Indian women. Ask the women in your family.
Bully? Two Elk threatens to kill someone daily and you call me a
bully? For what, defending myself? I have never seen you stand up for
an Indian woman or even stand with one. Yet you threaten to leave over
a white woman.
you don't know me and you are a sad paranoid lier.
You started this Lisa. You do not have the right to tell Indians what

There is nothing wrong with me Wayne. I'm fine. There is a response to
racism by Indian men. You see it on all our reservations, all our
communities. The white man stole power from Indian men. Indian men
turn and steal power from Indian women and children. You see a lot of
physical, sexual, and mental abuse in our communities by Indian men.
That has to be faced and healed. Do you know of the movie about the
soap lake community? It is an old movie and very good. It is about
alcoholism. The community had 100% alcoholism among the adults and
most of the youth. One woman decided to change and quit drinking. When
her husband decided to quit, he took leadership. It was a struggle,
but at the end of the movie they had one hundred percent sobriety. At
the end of that documentary they decided to face the next problem. It
was the sexual abuse that was introduced by residential schools. The
Nuuchanulth communities are marching to stop that. Even on the
internet discussion lists you see Indian men who want to silence
Indian women. You see a lot of Indian men who see white women on your
arm as success symbols. One of my cousins came home with a masters in
english and a white wife. I told him one time that our white
nutritionist said that she had Indian ancestors. Her husband is the
director of our Fisheries program and Indian. He said, "No, he has his
Masters." The wife of an educated Indian man couldn't have a wife with
Indian blood. To be successful he has to have a white wife. It's a
response to racism. I was talking with a white psychologist friend
about the white women who hang around Indians and specialize in Indian
men. She said they have low self esteem and go where they can be
considered special because they don't think they're special.
If you take a group of people and commit genocide on them. You will
have a people that have all the problems we do. We are all walking
wounded.
Sorry wayne, but I am okay. I probably have every problem that modern
Indian women carry. I'm working on my healing. I probably will for the
rest of my life. Oh by the way, I was just appointed to the commission
on racism in Port Angeles. So it is a problem that I think about a lot
and seek solutions. If you have any ideas I would like to hear them.
A large and growing number of "Indian Men"...are looking at the mannerisms
of Indian Women today..and wondering where all their whining and bitching
comes from...(and yes,the Indian Woman has every right to cry foul)... They
take up this battle against "men" and pass it on to their children. I've
seen it myself in the inner parts of Vancouver...where "those" in control
lay all the blame on Indian Men..
They somehow forget that living a Life with another Human Being is a two way
affair. It's like the Pharmaceutical Companies..they don't want a
"Cure-all-pill"...Hell,if that were to happen...Where would They get their
$$money$$ from...
The same for those Safe-Houses for abused women and "Those People"..."WHO
WORK THERE"....If all the Indian Men suddenly began to not abuse Indian
Women..and live Life in a more meaningful way..."Those People" would be out
of a job. I hope you can see my meaning of "Those People"...
I've seen first hand what their *brain-washing* does to Indian Women and
Children....
I'm not saying ALL of "Those People" are in the same boat...but I assure
you,the majority of them are.
When Indian Women and Indian Men can come together and start ....The Healing
Process...together...That might be a step forwards. Having Those People near
and perhaps in the same room...who are trained and have enough experience to
handle issues,would also be advantageous.
I'm happy for you and your new "position"...
Racism will ...Forever be a part of the human condition...and no matter what
is done to eradicate it...IT will be with us forever.
The is one of The Facts of Life. Learning to *live with it*...is a first
response.
have a good one
respectfully
