WXRT just premiered "Poor Places," one of the new tracks from Yankee
Hotel
Foxtrot. They called it "darker" than their standard fare, which it
certainly is... but very interesting and experimental. An ambitious
piece... kind of like a mini-suite... full of little musical
vignettes... it
also incorporates the album title repeated... a bit musique concrete.
In a
way, you could say it has a real late '60s vibe to it... almost like
their
own "A Day in the Life."

The track is 5:15 long... I rather like it. It ends in a blast of
white
noise that makes it sound like you're lost in an emotional blizzard.

For those who didn't catch it on the airwaves, I've posted an MP3 file
(6.2
MB):

Hey, we're all going to buy the record as soon as it comes out
anyway...

Enjoy!

Listening to it now. Thanks, Dave.

More about it later.

thanks Fred!

Killer tune!

One thing I notice about it is the excellent choice of sounds and
textures. Maybe Wilco has taken a bit of a que from Radiohead?

By what? It sounds like a mess. It might have made a decent B-side or
extra track but it hardly ranks up there with Wilco's best work. Sounds
like a throwaway to me. If the rest of the CD sounds like this it will
be an easy decision whether to download for free or purchase the CD. If
any of you guys had to pay to hear 'Poor Music' you probably wouldn't be
raving like its the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Says you. The more I listen to it, the more I kinda like it.

Like I said earlier, it has to be put in context with the rest of
the disc. I can't judge any CD on just one song.

As usual, Scott beats me to the punch.

Ditto/what he said about context. I'm sure Bob Dylan sounds
'poor' next to Steely Dan and Foreigner, eh?

". . . properly conceived and handled noise is not noise at all, but
music whose textures just happen to be a little thicker and more
involved than usual, so that you may not hear much but obscurity the
first time, but various subsequent playings can open up whole sonic
vistas you never dreamed were there."
--Lester Bangs

That's all I kept thinking of after hearing Poor Places the first
time. Sums it up rather nicely, I thought . . . I definitely think
the song's a keeper.

Cheers, Theresa
