Emma Townshend on her father's somewhat odd un-rock'n'roll musical
enthusiasms -
"Another time, he came back from Tower Records with 11 boxes of
records. In the boxes, there were no less than three copies of "Off
the Wall", Michael Jackson's first solo album. Exactly why did you buy
three, I asked him? "Well, it was so good! I just kept thinking I had
to be sure to pick up a copy, and I was in a rush, I couldn't remember
what I had already got, but I thought, well if I get more than one, I
can give it to people as a gift."
1979, before he became visibly insane. That's the album where he later
decided the cover photo (with his real face) had to be updated to show his
new, surgically-enhanced visage. Well, he sold hundreds of millions of
albums, won 13 Grammy awards, certainly made his mark in musical history.
Too bad he eventually lost his mind.
Yeah, and he definitely wasn't a healthy individual. He looked to be
100 pounds soak and wet. They said he had a heart attack and went into
cardiac arrest and then a coma. There were reports he also had cancer,
but his people denied it. His skin might of been 20 years old, but his
body looked 80 it was so frail. He was scheduled to perform 50 sold
out shows in London's O2 Arena in 2 weeks with the financial backing
of two billionaires.
It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to hear, after the autopsy,
that he went the Elvis route and died of a prescription drug overdose.
I think that's exactly what happened. What a sad story. He was such
a normal looking, handsome kid when he released Off the Wall and after
that he just went downhill. What a talent and such a shame to see him
suffer like that over the years. His parents really screwed him
up...and the rest of the family too. Just sad all around.

There may be a legitimate YES connection though... seems to me, at
times anyway, there has been an indefinite but recognizable
alternation of trends between high-pitched and lower pitched lead
singers. In the early to mid-70s the fashion tended toward the former.
Maybe MJ's (and Donny Osmond too!) ultra-high vocals helped create
the trend that nudged 2 or 3 Yes songs into greater AM-popularity.
(Some people, believe it or not, probably find this idea falls into
the 'specious at best' category. ...Some people say they like it.)
Speaking of a connection...didn't know there was one between Michael
Jackson and Farrah Fawcett who both died the same day. Appearently
MJ's first girlfriend was Tatum O'Neal, daughter of Ryan, who as you
know was in a long term relationship with Farrah.
Well said. I for one am glad he's dead. He had no talent, and was a
complete lunatic/psycho. all of his "music" should be banned.
