Most critics praise Keith's "lead drumming" in Happy Jack. If you think
about it, it really does sound like it's actually the main instrument in the
song and everything else is rhythm. But in my own opinion, I think Slip Kid
sounds like a hard song to keep the beat. Then again, I actually think every
damn thing Keith played was damn near perfection, so I would pick any song
of any album!

The entire Live At Leeds album. If I were to pick just one song, it
would be...The Ox.
But people have different criteria for drummers. I would say Moon was the
best *rock* drummer there ever was, so as not to get into "apples and oranges"
arguments; there are a number of jazz fanatics who would dismiss Moon
for lacking the kinds of technical subtleties of the best jazz drummers,
but Moon wasn't playing jazz, he was playing rock, which makes completely
different demands on its players!
For pure speed, Moon was #1, though--in the recent VH1 bio Townshend said
that they took a tape of Moon's drumming to some lab analyst, who said
that what he was hearing was humanly impossible; faster than a machine
gun, in fact!!

From the Waist"--a great example of Keith taking a song and "running with
it, playing melodically, and seeming to get ahead of the rest of the band.

Being a drummer myself, I know how difficult Keith's drumming is to imitate.
I'd pick Cobwebs and Strange, The Ox, Heaven and Hell, or anything from Who's
Next Really, and then there's Who Are You where he doesn't play a beat. The
whole song's a fill in on the drums. Anything fast from Quadrophenia is good.
Pretty much any song by The Who, but definitely Cobwebs and Strange and Who Are

versions of "Cobwebs&Strange", "I Can't Explain" or "Substitute".

DFTW is one of the best songs for the whole band: Roger howls the lyrics, Keith
thunders away, John is incredible and Pete is powerchording and windmilling
away. (I'm talking about live versions of course).
