From Youtube:

"In July 1991, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle meet to
decide on a song to record for an upcoming Elton John tribute CD. Roger
presses for "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)" and ultimately
gets his way. Pete however, in a nod to Elton's inclusion of "I Can't
Explain" in the middle of his version of "Pinball Wizard," includes a
bit of "Take Me To The Pilot" in the middle of The Who's cover. The Who
do not record it together. Pete and drummer Simon Phillips record their
part at Eel Pie Studios. Producer Jon Astley is displeased with Simon's
work and replaces it with a programmed drum machine. The track is then
sent off to Revolution Studios for Roger and John to lay in their parts.
While there they are filmed for a music video and interview segments to
be included in a later video release. It is the last Who studio
recording with John."

Last studio recording with JAE?

I guess it's right...but 1991 seems so long ago.

Happy New Year all.

Yes, I guess that is the last studio recording with John. Sounds like
it was made the same way Endless Wire was made....session musicians
(including Roger) laying down their tracks and leaving.

How were the Who tracks on Pete's Iron Man recorded? Probably much the
same way. For better or for worse, It's Hard is still the last time
they entered the studio as a team, looking to create new music on the
spot....or even the last time they actually all recorded together.

Last with The Who. His last released studio recording was the one on the
Gov't Mule album.

I talked to Pete at the 'Meet and Greet' in Chicago a few weeks back and he
said they indeed do have a studio version of "Real Good Looking Boy" with
John on bass. He didn't say how it was recorded. I asked if he meant the
rehearsals for the tour and he said no an actual studio recording.
I also asked about the JBL recorded final rehearsals with John and he said
both the band and JBL recorded the sessions but for whatever reason Roger
didn't want them out. He didn't elaborate and I didn't want to push.

Wonder why he called in Greg Lake to do a new bass recording? Hmmm, that
would make an interesting question to ask.

Time for a ninja raid on somebody's vaults, there is more than enough Who
music not being heard already.

How can this be? I didn't even think that the song was written when
John was alive. Why didn't they just use his bassline in the final mix?

Pete says stuff like that all the time and it ends up being wrong or
misunderstood. Who knows though? We have to get to the bottom of this.

Also, I think I would have liked to see Greg Lake tour instead of
Pino....no offense to Pino, but a seasoned rock star joining the Who on
tour would have been pretty cool.

The song was written before John died and was apparently practiced to be
played on the 2002 tour. Hell "Old Red Wine" was played at the 3rd show
after John's passing in Las Vegas.
I realize Pete gets dates wrong like Relay was from 1974 on the RAH CD, but
after he said it I questioned it myself and asked if he meant a rehearsal
and he said no they did it in the studio.
Maybe they didn't want it to seem like they were cashing in on John's death.
You know damn well the record company would have put a sticker on the CD,
"the last Who recording with John" or something like that.
It would have been a good bonus track though on Endless Wire.

I think Pete said something recently about thinking the idea of using an
archival John performance on a new Who track was creepy although they did do
that with Keith for "Four Faces" on the Quadrophenia soundtrack and John
himself used a Keith drum track for "Boogie Man" on Music for Van-Pires.
